Solids premiere ‘Wait It Out’

Solids

Solids have released Wait It Out, the second single from their forthcoming ‘Else’ EP. Wait it Out sees the band expand on the blistering sound of their earlier releases, dialing back the relentless intensity and exploring new textures and tempos. “The main riff of Wait It Out is pretty much the first thing that popped when we started jamming for what would later become ‘Else,'” says vocalist/guitarist Xavier Germain Poitras, “we knew we wanted a more diverse palette in terms of tempo compared to what we’d done in the past; a couple fast songs but also slower, heavier ones. And since this song is about problems or crises that can only be solved with time it made perfect sense to play it as slowly as we could.” Take a listen to Wait It Out via Soundcloud below.

Solids’ 2014 LP, ‘Blame Confusion’ (Fat Possum/Dine Alone), was lauded for its revved-up take on early 90s alt-rock. Its poppy melodies set against a dense, relentless soundscape pointed to Germain-Poitras and drummer Louis Guillemette’s formative years in the hardcore scene.

The ‘Else’ EP sees the band checking in after a year of near-constant touring. Having played more than 200 shows in 2014-2015 with the likes of Pity Sex, Makthaverskan, Nothing, PUP, Single Mothers and Metz, the EP reflects that road weariness with a group of songs that vibrate at a lower frequency, documenting the waiting, the bleary-eyed confusion and the blur of days that come with life on the road.

The EP serves as a melancholic deconstruction of the ’90s slacker ethos explored on their first LP, but it also charts Solids’ transition into a wider and more experimental sound, borrowing strands from Dinosaur Jr., Hum and Unwound and coiling them into an anxious, alienated sound that’s all their own. The final product is a snapshot of a band that’s travelled 5000 miles in 19 minutes; a band that’s chained itself to the road in search of inspiration.

‘Else’ will be available April 15th via Dine Alone & Topshelf Records. It’s available for pre-order here.
