Dumb Numbers is Australian video maker and musician Adam Harding, along with a revolving cast of collaborators that includes Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr), Dale Crover (Melvins), Murph (Dinosaur Jr), David Yow (Scratch Acid, the Jesus Lizard), Kevin Rutmanis (Cows, Melvins), Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten), Bobb Bruno (Best Coast), Jenny Lee Linberg (Warpaint), Bonnie Mercer (Grey Daturas, Dead River) and Steve Patrick (Useless Children). On Halloween, Dumb Numbers will release a special box set featuring three 10″ records, each one a split with another artist: David Lynch, Melvins, and David Yow.
Today, Dumb Numbers shared a track lifted from their split with Lynch, the Twin Peaks-inspired I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night. Featuring Warpaint’s Jenny Lee Lindberg on bass, Best Coast’s Bobb Bruno on mellotron, and Melvin’s Dale Crover on drums, the track was influenced by Lynch’s hit TV show in various ways: Lindberg’s bass line draws from its infamous theme song, Harding’s vocals were influenced by those of Julee Cruise, and the song’s guitar solo was recorded in the same double-reversed manner as the dialog from the Red Room: written forwards, learned backwards, recorded, and then reversed. Take a listen to I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night via Soundcloud below.
Having just wrapped up a handful of live dates with The Lemonheads, Dumb Numbers plays a special show on October 2 at Eagle Rock, CA’s All Star Lanes – where the bowling alley scene in Lynch’s Lost Highway was filmed – with Jenny Lee Lindberg’s new project Jennylee and Tweak Bird.
Dumb Numbers’ new box set is available for pre-order here, with a portion of all proceeds going to The David Lynch Foundation For Consciousness-Based Education And World Peace.
