A Glimpse Into ‘Birthing’
Produced by Michael Gira and recorded at Soundfabrik Berlin, ‘Birthing’ is already making waves with the release of its first preview track, I Am A Tower.
Gira reflects on the album’s creation: “The material for this album took shape over the course of our 2023–2024 tour—songs like ‘The Healers,’ ‘I Am a Tower,’ ‘Birthing,’ ‘Guardian Spirit,’ ‘Rope,’ and ‘Away’ evolved through performance before being fully realized in the studio. Two tracks, ‘Red Yellow’ and ‘The Merge,’ came together entirely in the studio.”“It all starts with me alone, an acoustic guitar, and a vision. From there, my extraordinary band helps shape these skeletal ideas into something powerful. Improvisation, revision, relentless focus, and sheer endurance—this is how we forged ‘Birthing’ into existence.”
“This album, along with our recent live release ‘Live Rope,’ represents my final deep dive into the consuming sonic world that has defined Swans for years. We’ll do one last tour in this form at the end of 2025—then, change is coming.”
Gira hints that Swans will continue in a stripped-down incarnation, with glimpses of this evolution already present in ‘Birthing’.

Swans: A Legacy of Transformation
Formed by Michael Gira in 1982, Swans have never stood still. From their early days of brutal, unrelenting noise (Filth, Cop), to the industrial rock of Greed, the atmospheric intensity of Children of God, and the stark acoustics of The Burning World, Swans have reshaped their sound time and time again.
They re-emerged in 2010 with ‘My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky,’ leading to a trilogy of widely acclaimed releases: ‘The Seer’ (2012), ‘To Be Kind’ (2014), and ‘The Glowing Man’ (2017). With ‘Leaving Meaning’ (2019) and ‘The Beggar’ (2023), the band continued to evolve, building toward what ‘Birthing’ promises to be—one of their most striking works yet.
