Montreal’s genre-bending firestarters TEKE::TEKE are back with ‘Hagata Delux,’ an expanded, reimagined, and fully loaded edition of their 2023 album ‘Hagata’—dropping via Kill Rock Stars. This deluxe treatment pulls in new remixes, rarities, and B-sides from the ‘Hagata’ era, including previously unreleased gems, wild reinterpretations by Holy Fuck and SUUNS, and—for the first time ever—puts these cult-favourite tracks on vinyl.
And in perfect TEKE::TEKE fashion, the band leads with a twist: they’ve just shared Doppelganger (Version Française), a French-language version of their shadowy standout track. The accompanying music video, directed by the band’s surrealist frontwoman Maya Kuroki, taps into themes of duality and identity with cinematic flair—think Kieslowski’s The Double Life of Veronique meets a Truffaut-directed fever dream.
Parallel Lives, Psychedelic Arrangements
The bones of Doppelganger were inspired by ‘60s Okinawan grooves and the dreamy melancholy of ‘70s Japanese pop ballads. But when Maya reimagined the lyrics in French, something clicked. Guitarist and composer Sei Nakauchi Pelletier, who juggles both Japanese and French-Canadian roots, felt the dual-language version hit even closer to home.
“That’s when we decided to bring in strings,” Sei explains. “We wanted to lean into that Serge Gainsbourg/Jean-Claude Vannier aesthetic.” Montreal-based string wizard Guido Del Fabbro added arrangements that give the track a smoky, retro cinematic edge.
What’s On Hagata Delux?
‘Hagata Delux’ doesn’t just expand the album—it opens a whole new dimension. The deluxe version includes:
- Five reworks/remixes of ‘Hagata’ tracks, including a gnarly boom-bap flavoured flip of Gotoku Lemon by Sei himself
- Brand-new original TEKE::TEKE song Meimu
- Rarities like their searing Japanese cover of The Clash’s Bankrobber
- A version of Unwound’s Corpse Pose that melts and rebuilds the original in the band’s signature style
- Their track Visible Lights from the Dungeons & Dragons comp
- A killer take on Chidori by legendary surf guitarist Takeshi Terauchi, one of TEKE::TEKE’s biggest inspirations
And if you’re a vinyl lover, you’re in luck: this one’s pressed on eco-mixed recycled wax for a limited run.
Assassin’s Creed, but Make It TEKE::TEKE
Fresh off scoring Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows soundtrack, TEKE::TEKE’s momentum is only picking up. Their album ‘Kage No Iro’—featuring six original songs and a bold reinterpretation of Ezio’s Family—is now available to stream or snag on vinyl. The songs aren’t just in the game; they live and breathe as a standalone album, painted with Maya’s own artwork and bursting with the band’s psych-surf intensity.
Summer Shows & Fall Euro Dates
TEKE::TEKE will hit stages across Canada this summer before heading to Europe in the fall. Known for their electric, unpredictable performances, the band brings together guitarists Sei Nakauchi Pelletier and Hidetaka Yoneyama, flutist Yuki Isami, and vocalist/visual artist Maya Kuroki, with a rhythm section that dials everything up to 11.
