Toronto’s dream-pop darlings Twin Rains are back to stir the clouds and shake the skies. Their new single, The Evil That You Know (Let it Go), is the second track they’ve unleashed in 2025 (following April’s moody Quick Sickness), and it’s already got us caught in its stormy swirl.
This track isn’t just dream pop—it’s drama pop. It kicks in with a heavy, pulsing beat, rolls into a hypnotic, insistent chord progression, and shimmers with that lush shoegaze haze we love. There’s enough atmospheric synth to lift you out of your seat, but don’t get too comfortable—this one’s coming back around to blow your roof off.
Jay Merrow, one half of the band’s core songwriting/production duo, says the song was literally born out of thunder:
“It started as this wall-of-sound moment—guitars, drums, total chaos—that felt like a loud thunderstorm. So we built this calm, synthy break in the middle, like the eye of the storm. Then it all crashes back in. That final chorus is my favourite moment.”
Christine Stoesser, the other half of the duo (and the band’s lyrical soul), digs into something deeper:
“This song—and honestly, a lot of what we write—is about self-deception. I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to say on that subject.”
The track features drums recorded by Alexandre Bonenfant at Dreamhouse Studio in Toronto, and mastering magic courtesy of Brock McFarlane at CPS Mastering in Vancouver.
Now, if you’re new to Twin Rains, here’s a little backstory: The band is made up of Jay Merrow, Christine Stoesser, and drummer Greg Smith. Their debut album ‘Automatic Hand’ (2016) turned heads, landed them a publishing deal with NYC’s Rough Trade Publishing, and even earned a spot on the Polaris Prize’s longer list in 2017. Their tune Flash Burn found its way into Seth Rogen’s box office hit Good Boys—not bad for a debut.
Since then, they’ve lit up stages across Canada—ROM’s Friday Night Live, SWIFF’s Cinegaze, Crystal Lake, Empty Fest, and more—sharing stages with everyone from Luna Li to Zoon. During the pandemic, they scored the acclaimed No Tickets at the Door doc, capturing the heartbeat of Toronto’s live music scene for Hot Docs.
In 2021, they dropped their second album ‘Unreal City,’ with lead single Strawberry Moon earning spins on CBC and Sirius and props from Wavelength Music, who called the album “a masterpiece” and “the sleeper hit of the pandemic.” Since then, it’s been nothing but forward motion—two killer singles in 2023, the heady Quick Sickness last month, and now, the swirling storm that is The Evil That You Know (Let it Go).
Get ready. The clouds are gathering—and Twin Rains is about to pour.
