Toronto’s Twist recently announced their EP, ‘Benefits,’ the follow up to their well-recieved 2016 debut LP, ‘Spectral‘. Now, Twist have shared the second single from the EP, Leave This Town via YouTube below.

The EP, due out via Buzz Records on September 22nd, is comprised of a collection of songs that were honed while the band were touring in support of ‘Spectral,’ playing around North America with artists like Chastity Belt, Half Waif, Dilly Dally, TOPS, The Oh Sees and Jimmy Eat World. Its 4 tracks bear the marks of that experience, displaying a newfound focus and confidence, and a cohesive sonic direction, as Hermiston’s bandmates find new ways to augment the sharp pop sensibility that underpins her songwriting.

The first single from ‘Benefits’ drew comparisons to Best Coast, and established the melodically dense, and imaginatively constructed jangle pop sound of the EP, and Leave This Town adds new wrinkles with its cutting lead guitar lines, subtly layered vocals and the gradual build of it’s arrangement.

According to band’s lead songwriter and guitarist Laura Hermiston the song was written on the eve of the band’s tour in support of their debut, when she was taken by an impulse to turn her back on her hometown and never look back.

As Hermiston tells Stereogum: “A lot of people in my life began to move away last year. Some people boasted about their new lives and some people wanted to come back. Each time a close friend leaves, I wonder what’s stopping me. Is being realistic just being scared?

“I wrote this song as I was getting ready to go on tour. I loved the idea of leaving for months and heading somewhere I always dreamt of living. The chorus feels like a childish sentiment maybe, but at the same time for me it feels empowering. Sometimes you have to get rid of what’s holding you back and start controlling your direction.”

‘Benefits’ is due out via Buzz Records on September 22nd. You can preorder it here.
