‘Let’s Talk Pt. 1’ is the first instalment in an ambitious double-album release for 2021, taking its name from its direct message – to implore people to be more open around mental health issues. Going this route wasn’t necessarily planned however, with the confusion of our current time being turned towards a positive, as songwriter and multi-instrumentalist William Southward explains:
“With all the delays to tours and release plans due to COVID-19, I spent a lot more time writing new material. That’s where the decision to put out a double album came about. Both parts will be album length”
Taken from Pt. 1, I Feel Fine (Hallelujah) is a quintessential example of Will’s trademark and endearing indie-pop-meets-dream-pop style, all the while keeping a glint in its eye.
He explains the genesis of the single:
“Dark and brooding, with moments of light and glitter, this is one of the first songs I wrote on the album. Some songs I develop over time, but this one came to me really quickly. I really like its structure, with the uplifting chorus to counter its darker verses, all of which builds to this big euphoric “Hallelujah” ending, that is meant to be a bit tongue in cheek. The song I think is a celebration of life and death. The acceptance of the inevitability and finality of death, and the feelings and emotions that go with that.“
In tackling these themes, there is a direct continuation from 2019’s acclaimed album ‘Are You Ok?’, which similarly had themes of mental health at the forefront of its narrative.
The release of this saw the band fall into a similar space as the likes of Pizzagirl, Barrie, Girl Ray and The Undercover Dream Lovers in its addictive, sophisticated LoFi pop. The messages and sounds of their work has had particular resonance, creating a cult fan following as well as opening doors at key cultural gate-keepers. Steve Lamacq and Lauren Laverne at BBC 6 Music have been key champions, with spins also coming in from Radio 1 and Apple Music 1. The likes of The Guardian, The Line of Best Fit, DORK Magazine and Louder Than War at press have been singing their praises.
On the live side, support slots with the iconic Flaming Lips and Phosphorescent have seen the band take in legendary London venues the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and KOKO.
Wasuremono are William Southward, Madelaine Ryan, Phoebe Phillips and Isaac Phillips.
