As the countdown begins for their highly anticipated album ‘Second Wind,’ indie darlings Melys dropped their shimmering new single, Sgleinio (Shine). The track arrives just ahead of their Record Store Day UK album release on limited orange vinyl on April 12, setting the stage for a triumphant return.
Sgleinio is a radiant indie-pop gem, blending infectious synths, rich harmonies, and Melys’ signature emotional depth. The track tackles the modern pressures of online life and the quest for self-acceptance, unfolding through hypnotic finger clicks and claps before exploding into a euphoric chorus packed with soaring vocals, crashing guitars, and lush analogue synths.
Frontwoman Andrea Parker explains:
“Sgleinio came from watching the struggles of comparing ourselves to others online. We’ve all felt it—whether personally or by witnessing someone close to us battle with it. The pressure to maintain a perfect image is overwhelming, and I wanted to create a song that reminds us that we are enough, just as we are.”
Who Are Melys?
Hailing from the breathtaking village of Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia, Melys burst onto the scene in the late ’90s, signing with legendary Welsh label Ankst (home to Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci).
With regular airplay from BBC Radio 1 tastemakers Mark Radcliffe, Steve Lamacq, Marc Riley, and John Peel, Melys quickly carved out a dedicated following. They inked a major deal, launched their own studio and label, and delivered four studio albums alongside an acclaimed Introducing album (released across Europe and the US).
In 2002, they clinched the Welsh Music Award for Best Live Act, becoming firm favorites of the legendary John Peel, recording 11 BBC sessions for him, and even topping Peel’s Festive 50 in 2001 with their track Chinese Whispers.
After a hiatus where Andrea and Paul opened restaurants and Gary became an academic, Melys roared back onto the scene, recently touring with The Wedding Present and releasing a BBC Sessions album (Vol.1), featuring archival sessions from John Peel, Huw Stephens, and Adam Walton.
Now, with old friend and producer Gorwel Owen (Super Furries, Gorky’s, Gwenno) at the helm, Melys are putting the finishing touches on their new album, ‘ Second Wind’—and the excitement is palpable.
