Louisville’s art-rock shapeshifters Wombo are back in action — and they’re not just dipping a toe in. They’re cannonballing right into a new era with their third full-length album, ‘Danger in Fives,’ dropping August 8 on Fire Talk Records. Along with the big news, the trio has shared the title track (and lead single), complete with a trippy video directed by their own Cameron Lowe. And yes, a massive US, UK, and EU headline tour is officially on the books.
If Danger in Fives sounds like a warning — good. It’s meant to. As frontwoman Sydney Chadwick puts it on the title track: “See through mind said to me, ‘the danger comes in fives’… Now we all sit in a circle and pass the danger down.” The accompanying video spins a looping day-in-the-life where everything’s familiar… until it isn’t. Think Groundhog Day, but artsier.
This new chapter finds Wombo—Chadwick (bass/vocals), Lowe (guitar), and Joel Taylor (drums)—digging deep into their creative process. Forget autopilot. They tossed out the usual writing routines, experimented with digital textures, and even dabbled with drum machines to shake things up. Some songs—like S.T. Tilted and Cloud 36—arrived fast, but the band spent over a year fine-tuning every detail.
“We really quickly threw a lot of paint down and it was almost the picture,” Lowe says, “but we still tweaked it for a year.”
And the results? A record that feels simultaneously off-kilter and locked-in, intuitive and refined. Fans of their previous records—especially 2022’s ‘Fairy Rust’ and their 2020 debut ‘Blossomlooksdownuponus’—will feel right at home, but ‘Danger in Fives’ isn’t here to reintroduce Wombo. It’s a reminder: they’re in full command of their sound, and they’re not afraid to twist it into new shapes.
With 30+ demos and a fresh approach to songwriting, ‘Danger in Fives’ feels like a breakthrough. Or maybe a breakdown of the old system — in the best possible way.
