Boise trio Trippy Hearts are back with Impossible Current, the second single from their upcoming sophomore album ‘Murmuration’ (out June 5th via My My), and it’s the kind of song that wraps itself around you like warm water — right before it pulls you under. In the best way.
Lush, hypnotic, and deceptively inviting, Impossible Current channels feminist fury through a gorgeous, swelling soundscape. Jenn Sutkowski’s bell-like Fender Rhodes leads the way on an ascending line that anchors the whole track, while Stephen Samuelson’s fluid drumming and Brent Heiner’s pedal-drenched guitar build a relentless sense of forward motion. Sutkowski also layers in Mellotron flute for warmth and depth — and yeah, it’s as dreamy as it sounds.
But don’t let the beauty fool you. The song has teeth.
Sutkowski wrote it in the wake of Sinéad O’Connor’s death, drawing on memories of watching O’Connor tear up that photo on SNL — and the brutal backlash that followed. “My growing feminism was at odds with my parents’ staunch Catholicism,” she says, “and I remember feeling: if she is this angry, then something true is being exposed.”
From there, Impossible Current became a meditation on female resistance — specifically, what happens to women who refuse to stay small. The song’s central image says it all: “Your anger tore up what we knew / Burned so hot it had to be true / And you were an impossible current / You were wild / They said you were a serpent / Did you eat them alive?”
“The song explores how women, especially, are expected to behave,” Sutkowski explains. “But what happens when we take the names we’re called and turn them into power? It’s a warning, too: be careful what you call us, because you might get that very thing. You might get eaten alive. And all of it happens while we’re still swimming upstream in a culture that isn’t built for our comfort or convenience.“
It’s subversive, cathartic, and quietly radical — and it rides on a melodic flow so beautiful you almost miss the message. Almost.
‘Murmuration’ drops June 5th. Pre-order it on Bandcamp.
