Hull trio Strange Pink are back, and they’ve brought a slice of hazy, grunge-gaze introspection with them. The band have just shared their new single Sculcoates, the first taste of their upcoming EP ‘Guest Room’, due out 23rd October 2026 via Desert Mine Music.
A Song Born From a Talk-Singing Trick
Named after the Hull neighbourhood where the band rehearse, Sculcoates takes a stroll through the city — from plastic pollution on the Humber to crowded tower blocks, riot-scarred streets and staring Victorian statues. Frontman Sam Forrest explains the track’s origins came from an unlikely place of inspiration:
“I remembered Tom Petty saying that he ended up talking, rather than singing, over the verse for ‘Here Comes My Girl’ because he couldn’t figure out a melody, so I tried this approach, and ended up talk-singing some imagery of a city.“
Forrest continues, describing the track’s wider scope: “I tried to reference the recent riots with burning buildings and broken windows and contrasted this with the staring statues from the Victorian era in the city centre overlooking various madmen and false prophets.”
The Concept Behind ‘Guest Room’
The EP takes its name from a disappearing domestic space — the guest room, increasingly swapped out for home offices, gyms and studios. Bassist Eddie Logie sums up the concept: “Guest rooms have become an almost extinct phenomenon, a rare liminal space oddity that occupies the boundaries of late modernity… An ode to a now nonexistent space.”
Mixed by Nick “The Muscle” Russell (Bedsit, ROTHCO) and mastered by Ed Woods (The Who, Manic Street Preachers), ‘Guest Room’ finds the band leaning further into their atmospheric, emotionally-charged sound.
Who Are Strange Pink?
Fronted by Sam Forrest (formerly of Nine Black Alps), Strange Pink formed in Hull in 2024 and released their debut EP ‘Out Of Focus’ in 2025 via Forever Underdogs, picking up early support from ASBO Magazine and Mystic Sons. The band’s line-up is rounded out by drummer Dom Smith — also a journalist, mental health counsellor and disability charity campaigner — and bassist Eddie Logie. They’ve since caught the ear of BBC Introducing’s Jericho Keys, BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq and Radio X’s John Kennedy.
