A Nod to the Classics with a Modern Twist
Clocking in at a brisk 1:49, the radio edit of Randy is a compact burst of energy, while Jenny’s In A Sleep World runs 3:09, offering a playful, reimagined spin on a 1979 punk anthem. Drawing influences from Devo, The Dead Milkmen, The Fixx, The Cars, and The Go-Go’s, the single seamlessly blends alternative, indie, new wave, power pop, synthwave, and punk sounds.
Autogramm is known for their sing-along anthems, but this release carries an extra dose of quirky charm. Originally intended for their upcoming album ‘Music That Humans Can Play,’ Randy took a new direction when the band decided the lyrics needed updating. True to their self-described “cat band” identity, they re-recorded the vocals and dedicated the track to their drummer’s cat, Randy.
Drummer The Silo explains, “It’s a letter to a good friend in need of a little confidence push. Everyone needs an ego boost sometimes. Even if they’re a cat.” With playful lyrics like, “If you think you wanna jump up on that countertop, well baby you’ve got the tools. The world’s looking for a pretty cool dude, and maybe that dude is you,” Randy delivers a much-needed pick-me-up with a wink.
Guitarist Lars Von Seattle sums it up best: “Nuevo juevo punk pop for allergic feline lovers. Blazing guitars, squiggly synths, bumping bass, and deftly thrashing drums collide in a spirit of uplift for the irrepressible Randy in all of us.” Listeners will immediately catch echoes of DEVO’s tick-tock rhythms and motorik basslines, all wrapped in a modern, quirky package.
