LA synth-punk trio Automatic are officially back, and they’re throwing down a bold new track—Is It Now?—the first taste of their upcoming album of the same name, out this fall on Stones Throw.

After two killer albums (‘Signal’ and ‘Excess’), Automatic wanted to shake things up. For Is It Now?, they teamed up with producer Loren Humphrey (known for his work with Arctic Monkeys, Nice As Fuck, Cameron Winter), aiming to evolve their signature blend of minimalist, hypnotic post-punk and deviant dance-pop.

The title track Is It Now? is a defiant anthem about staying true to yourself in a world that feels like it’s imploding. Built around a punchy call-and-response chorus, the track wrestles between rebellion and resignation. Synth wizard and vocalist Izzy Glaudini puts it plainly: “The thing I think about the most is: how do you have a sense of joy while the world seems to be collapsing?”

She adds, “‘Is It Now?’ is about trying to not feel like a victim in this environment. It’s important to still feel a sense of joy, even amongst all the horrible shit going on in the world.”

Between records, the members took time to recharge and explore other paths: Izzy dove deep into producing, bassist Halle Saxon Gaines studied botany, and drummer Lola Dompé moved to the countryside, got married, and started caring for horses (very wholesome, very unexpected).

Automatic will hit the road this fall with Sextile for a co-headlining tour that’ll bounce from Salt Lake City to LA, with stops across the U.S. and Canada. If their live shows are anything like their records—icy, kinetic, and just the right kind of weird—you won’t want to miss out.
