Following the pulsing nocturnal energy of John on the Ceiling and the euphoric waves of Infinity Peaking, this latest release takes things up a notch. Lake Disappointment is a visceral, high-voltage dive into blistering electronics—a sound that reflects a band fearlessly reinventing itself. Inspired by supporting Daniel Avery and an unforgettable rave at Field Day, bdrmm have embraced dance music elements like never before, pushing their sonic boundaries to exhilarating new heights.
Frontman Ryan Smith on Lake Disappointment: “This is probably the most aggressive and exciting track we’ve ever made. When I first sent it to Alex (our producer), I’d never seen him so hyped. Within all the melancholy of this record, there’s also a lot of anger. This is us letting it out—our way of saying f** you to the wrongdoers.”*
The music video, shot in an abandoned Sheffield warehouse, was an unforgettable experience: “We created a dystopian TV shopping channel under the rule of our bosses at MicroTech. Standing around in the freezing cold for 12 hours in hospital gowns? Not ideal. But was it worth it? Absolutely. No pain, no gain (still waiting on the gain though).”
‘Microtonic’: A bold new era for bdrmm
The 10-track ‘Microtonic’ was crafted with longtime collaborator Alex Greaves and features guest appearances from Sydney Minsky Sargeant (Working Men’s Club) and Olivesque (Nightbus). The album marks a significant evolution for the band, incorporating a fuller spectrum of tones and textures.
“I used to feel boxed in by a certain sound, but something shifted. Now, I feel free to create exactly what I want, and right now, that means diving deep into electronic music—from dancefloor anthems to ambient explorations.” – Ryan Smith
bdrmm’s signature shoegaze origins remain a core influence, but ‘Microtonic’ weaves those guitars into a more expansive, experimental soundscape. With shoegaze experiencing its most powerful resurgence since the ’80s, bdrmm continue to stand at the forefront of the movement.
