Born Ruffians dropped their electrifying new single Supersonic Man alongside a mind-bending music video. This latest track is a taste of their highly anticipated album ‘Beauty’s Pride,’ set to land June 6 via Yep Roc (available for pre-order now). Supersonic Man follows their recent single Mean Time, which is already making waves on streaming platforms.

Frontman Luke Lalonde dives into the story behind Supersonic Man, revealing that it’s both a sci-fi-inspired adventure and a deeply personal metaphor for childbirth.

Supersonic Man is a sci-fi short story about a humanoid alien arriving on Earth, which also serves as a metaphor for childbirth. My wife was pregnant with our first child during much of the writing process for ‘Beauty’s Pride,’ and he was born while we were recording and mixing the album, so his presence is all over these songs. In Supersonic Man, I’m picturing him like Kal-El before he became Superman, hurtling toward Earth in his space pod.”

Having penned the band’s songs for over 20 years, Lalonde admits this album hits differently:

“Whenever we finish a record, I usually don’t want to hear it again, but this time, I actually like it!”

Born Ruffians Take the Stage at Mariposa Folk Festival

Alongside the new music, the band is gearing up for a performance at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, ON, running from July 4-6. Festival tickets are on sale now, with more tour dates to be announced soon.

A New Chapter: Beauty’s Pride

Born Ruffians, formed in 2004 in Midland, Ontario, have never stopped evolving. From their raw indie-rock roots to the polished sounds of ‘Birthmarks’ (2013), the Richard Swift-produced ‘Uncle, Duke & The Chief’ (2018), and the anthemic, Springsteen-tinged ‘JUICE’ (2020), they continue to push boundaries.

Produced by Roger Leavens and mixed by Gus Van Go (Metric, The Beaches), Beauty’s Pride merges alt-rock grit with electronic and experimental textures. The album kicks off with Mean Time, a synth-driven, danceable surprise that Lalonde never expected to fit into the Born Ruffians playbook:

“I wasn’t writing it as a Born Ruffians song at all. I just wanted to create something completely out of the mold.”

The album’s title stems from an unexpected source—Lalonde’s trip to India, where he borrowed a friend’s child-sized bike labeled Beauty’s Pride. A mix-up with the words sparked something deeper, reflecting both personal and creative rebirth.

For the first time in their history, the album also features a song written and sung by Maddy Wilde, who joined the band in 2022. Her contribution adds a fresh dynamic to the group:

Her fingerprints are all over this album,” says Lalonde.

After two decades, Born Ruffians refuse to settle. While many of their indie-rock contemporaries have faded, they continue to evolve, delivering music that’s as unpredictable and exhilarating as ever.
