Wire is turning up the volume this Record Store Day with two striking releases that celebrate the band’s rich, ever-evolving legacy.
A Double LP Journey Through Time
For 2025’s Record Store Day, fans can snag a special double LP edition of ‘Nine Sevens,’ a dynamic collection of the band’s 7” singles originally unveiled in 2018. This set isn’t just a greatest hits reel; it’s a vibrant tapestry that weaves together Wire’s early, sharp-edged singles with later, more experimental tracks. It’s an invitation to explore the band’s fearless evolution—from punchy, three-minute bursts of electric energy to expansive ambient washes. Think of each 7” as a frozen moment, capturing the raw, distilled spirit of Wire at its most creative.
A Vinyl First: Vien +
In addition to ‘Nine Sevens,’ Record Store Day marks the first vinyl appearance of Vien +—an updated take on Wire’s 1996 release by the offshoot project WIR. Born from the creative reinvention following drummer Robert Grey’s departure in 1990, WIR carried Wire’s inventive spirit into a new era of sparse, electronic soundscapes. ‘Vien +,’ which had only ever seen the light of CD and digital formats before, now gets a fresh, analog rebirth. This remastered release even features a new live-inspired re-recording of So & Slow that captures the dark, brooding vibe of the original while adding a surprising twist reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s knack for reinvention.
Exploring Wire’s Unique Soundscape
Wire has always danced on the edges of pop art, deconstructing the familiar and reassembling it into something entirely new. Their journey—from the crystalline simplicity of early post-punk to the textured complexity of later experimental phases—reads like a visual exploration of a blank canvas stretched to its limits. With ‘Nine Sevens,’ the first disc channels the immediacy of a greatest-hits collection, while the second disc veers off into uncharted territory, showcasing the band’s willingness to defy expectations and experiment with sound.
A Testament to Enduring Creativity
Beyond just a treat for record collectors, these releases capture the essence of Wire’s enduring artistic spirit. They’re snapshots of a band that has continually pushed the boundaries of what a song can be—a pop-noise hybrid that resonates like a hit from a parallel universe. From the electric zest of early singles to the introspective experiments of WIR’s later work, each track is a testament to Wire’s unparalleled ability to navigate and redefine the landscape of pop and art.
