It’s that time of the year again, when we wrap up the last 365 days of music with our favourites of the year. There were loads of great releases during 2016 and we’ve boiled it down to handful of albums that we liked best (in no particular order). We popped up a video from each album to give you a little taster if you’re unfamiliar with the artist or release.
Greys – ‘Outer Heaven‘
Greys pushed further out of their noise-punk beginnings but still kept what makes them great intact on this great second full-length. They even had time to squeeze in a free follow-up ‘Warm Shadow‘ in 2016.
Nothing – ‘Tired of Tomorrow’
Having to follow up an album like ‘Guilty Of Everything’ was pretty much impossible, but Nothing went darker and more depressing, and make a great record.
Traitrs – ‘Rites and Ritual’
Strong debut from Traitrs that was right up our alley. Its dark and moody, channeling early 80’s Depeche Mode and The Cure. We love it and look forward to Traitrs’ new EP in 2017.
Lush – ‘Blindspot’ EP
They got back together, they played some shows and then they left us with this beautiful EP before they split up again.
Odonis Odonis – ‘Post Plague’
Industrial and cold but still arty with DIY undertones. This LP is more danceable and beat driven than their previous albums.
Kestrels – ‘Kestels‘
As catchy as it is rattly, but Halifax’s Kestrels pull off the mixture.
Yak – ‘Alas Salvation’
They do rock’n’roll right. Dirty, gritty and totally bad ass.
DIIV – ‘Is The Is Are‘
Strong sophomore album from the Brooklyn indie darlings.
Preoccupations – ‘Preoccupations‘
After changing their name, Preoccupations released this album that sounded like something from the 1980’s but still sounded fresh.
Minor Victories – ‘Minor Victories’
This super group with members of Mogwai, Slowdive and Editors released the perfect album to chill out to.
True Widow – ‘Avvolgere‘
There’s something so infectious about True Widow’s super gritty and bassy mix of stoner rock and shoegaze.
Car Seat Headrest – ‘Teens of Denial’
Will Toledo can write a great indie rock song, and this album is jammed with them.
