Sparrow Sparrow b/w Overrated Species Anyhow
Limited Edition 7” Available Now via Joyful Noise Recordings
Deerhoof return with a powerful statement, releasing two new tracks—Sparrow Sparrow and Overrated Species Anyhow—as a digital double B-side and a limited edition lathe-cut 7” vinyl. More than just music, this release is a beacon of solidarity, with 100% of proceeds going to The Trevor Project, the leading organization providing crisis support for LGBTQ+ youth.
“In the new world we want to create, we need today’s trans youth to grow into tomorrow’s trans adults,” Deerhoof state, reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and resistance against oppression.
A Soundtrack for the Defiant
Musically, the double B-side is both haunting and urgent. Overrated Species Anyhow layers Satomi Matsuzaki’s stark folk vocals over lush, atmospheric choirs and birdsong, creating an otherworldly sense of beauty and defiance. Sparrow Sparrow flips the script, transforming the so-called “outsiders” into the story’s true visionaries, backed by Deerhoof’s signature off-kilter grooves. Matsuzaki’s agile vocals weave through seismic basslines, Greg Saunier’s unrelenting drum patterns, and John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez’s jagged, metallic guitar textures—culminating in something both chaotic and effortlessly natural.
Deerhoof Speak Out
The band has never shied away from bold statements, and this release is no exception. On their website, they describe Sparrow Sparrow and Overrated Species Anyhow as a message to anyone feeling marginalized, erased, or left behind by a system built on inequality:
“This ‘Double B-Side’ is meant as a life beam to anyone who has been feeling dehumanized by mainstream society lately. Anyone who didn’t find themselves in the rankings of which races, nationalities, genders, or belief systems have equal value. Anyone who sees life on earth as something more than some capitalist death match. Anyone who got thrown under the bus in the past year’s race to the bottom. Anyone who isn’t one of 2,781 billionaires who’ve taken control of the world. Anyone refusing to lick the fascist boot.”
