Released on March 31st, In The Real World captures the bittersweet ache of youthful detachment with an ethereal dream-pop vibe. Following the success of their 2024 debut EP, ‘No Place To Land,’ Night Swimming is expanding their sonic landscape with this latest track. Their sound has already earned nods from tastemakers like NME, Dork Magazine, and BBC 6 Music, and now they’re inviting fans to dive even deeper into their world.

The track is a beautifully crafted journey produced by Peter Miles (known for work with TORRES and Orla Gartland) and polished by Simon Scott of Slowdive. It explores the feelings of being emotionally and geographically isolated, perfectly reflecting the introspective mood of someone longing for something more. Vocalist and lyricist Meg Jones, who spent her formative years amidst the rural beauty of Shropshire, explains:

“In The Real World is written from the perspective of a young person who feels physically and emotionally isolated. It expresses a longing to be part of something bigger, but not feeling sure what that might look like.”

Night Swimming’s creative process is as organic as it is collaborative. “Typically, for me, melody comes first, letting lyrics flow organically,” Meg shares. “But with In The Real World, the phrase ‘I long to be in the real world’ surfaced immediately—it was raw, deeply subconscious, and perfectly captured the yearning I felt growing up in rural Shropshire. The music, inspired by those long walks with headphones and a head full of fantasy books, just needed to be honest and cinematic.”

Musically, the band draws from influences like Melody’s Echo Chamber, infusing controlled chaos and lush chord progressions into their work. Their sound, which also nods to legends like Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and Radiohead, evolves to include contemporary vibes from acts like Wolf Alice, Just Mustard, and Warpaint.

Live, Night Swimming’s energy is undeniable. Having kicked off the SWX stage at Bristol’s Dot To Dot Festival in 2024, they’ve since built a reputation for delivering immersive, heartfelt performances. Alongside support slots for Heartworms, bdrmm, Miki Berenyi, and more, their growing fanbase is ready to experience their debut headline tour.
