Austin’s multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Chad Doriocourt—known as Dorio—has just dropped his latest single, Make My World. Inspired by the magic of rummaging through used CD sections for that perfect retro find, the track channels an upbeat fusion of bubblegum pop and hip-hop percussion, with hints of neo-psych vibes reminiscent of Stones Throw Records, as noted by Flood Magazine.
Make My World expands Dorio’s meticulously handcrafted sonic universe by blending indie pop, electronic elements, and orchestral touches. The song features the dynamic vocal interplay of core collaborator Rachel Rascoe, who adds a quirky, heartfelt twist that recalls Stereolab’s 90s reinvention of classic melodies.
“We were deep into finding out-of-press CDs from Italy and Japan, soaking in 90s bubblegum pop, classical guitars, flutes, and horns,” Dorio explains. “We wanted to reimagine our world with those sounds, especially the richness of the classical guitar.”
Rachel adds, “This song is all about the little moments—like walking and talking together—that can be either delightful or a drag. I remember when Chad played the acoustic guitar line that forms the backbone of the song. We were listening to Pizzicato Five on repeat in his car, and I started picturing us strolling around a spinning globe in giant cartoon shoes.”
Built around a cheeky, timeless guitar riff, Make My World swirls with sing-song bubblegum energy and maximalist lounge textures. Time-warp tape tweaks, a brisk, infectious beat, and decade-spanning sonic elements create a journey through nostalgic soundscapes, all recorded in Dorio’s semi-analog home studio with a decisively contemporary edge.
For this track, Dorio has enlisted a stellar lineup of Texas-based musicians—CJ Eliasen on drums, David Alvarez on keys, Paulo Santos on flute, and Kenken Gorder on trumpet—with all other instruments performed by Dorio himself. The result is a sunshiny, upbeat sound interwoven with occasional darker themes, as the lyrics capture the eternal desire for small resets—be it a fresh haircut or a new pair of blue-and-white sneakers that never quite feel the same twice.
Make My World follows the momentum of Dorio’s latest double single, ‘The Drive Collection’ (2024), and comes after a successful national tour supporting the album ‘Strawberry Dream’ (2023).
