New York’s most delightfully chaotic quintet, Ecce Shnak (say it with us now: Eh-kay sh-knock), are back with a brand-new live track that doesn’t just make noise—it makes a statement.
Fight Song (Live) is the second release from their upcoming ‘Backroom Sessions’ EP, and let’s be clear: this is no bubblegum empowerment anthem. Instead, it’s a raw, riff-heavy gut-punch aimed at the rising tide of hate, with just the right dash of irony to keep things sharp. Originally released way back in 2012 as a tongue-in-cheek jab on their first EP, the song has since evolved with new lyrics—and a renewed purpose.
“We decided to change the lyrics and release a new version in reaction to the rancid bigotries that so plague the human spirit nowadays, in America and elsewhere,” explains David Roush, the band’s composer, bassist, and one of two vocalists. “The final line is a call to defend our basic human freedoms while we still have them: ‘Fight for your right to fight!’”
Ecce Shnak thrives at the intersection of punk urgency, art-rock curiosity, and a kind of theatrical weirdness that’s just impossible to fake. They’re not here to fit in—they’re here to make you think, sweat, and maybe spiral a little. The ‘Backroom Sessions’ EP, recorded live at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, NJ, and out now via Records, Man Records. If this latest track is anything to go by, it’s going to be a wild, unfiltered ride.
The EP follows the band’s brilliantly strange and stunning debut, ‘Shadows Grow Fangs,’ which treated us to bangers like the title track, the internet-roasting The Internet, and the groovy, sensual Prayer on Love. That EP was cooked up at The Art Farm (NY), mixed by Nicholas Vernhes (yep, the one who’s worked with Animal Collective and The War on Drugs), and mastered by Grammy-winner Joe LaPorta (he’s done magic for Bowie, FKA Twigs, and more). No small potatoes here.
The band—rounded out by Bella Komodromos (vocals), Chris Krasnow (guitar), Gannon Ferrell (guitar), and Henry Buchanan-Vaughn (drums)—is a five-headed performance beast walking a tightrope between brilliance and bedlam. And they’re taking that energy on the road.
Catch them this June as they team up with Spacehog and EMF for a full West Coast tour that starts in San Jose on June 14 and wraps up in Las Vegas on June 28. Yes, that’s the Spacehog. Yes, the EMF who are absolutely fantastic live. Yes, this is going to be completely bonkers in the best way.
But first, Fight Song (Live) is out on all major streaming platforms now.
