North American Tour Announced – Tickets On Sale Now

Ezra Furman, the fearless boundary-pushing artist, is back with her tenth studio album, ‘Goodbye Small Head,’ arriving May 16 via Bella Union. Written in a whirlwind of chaos and clarity, the album is a raw, cinematic dive into the experience of losing control—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The title nods to Sleater-Kinney’s 1999 single Get Up, capturing that moment of ecstatic surrender to forces beyond yourself.

Alongside the album announcement, Furman has unveiled the first single, Grand Mal, a sweeping, string-laden anthem that embodies the record’s stormy emotional core. The accompanying video, directed by Eleanor Petry, is a striking visual counterpart to the song’s intensity—watch it now.

Furman describes ‘Goodbye Small Head’ as twelve variations on the experience of completely losing control”—whether through illness, mysticism, heartbreak, or just the sheer disorienting nature of existence. The album marks a return to her roots, recorded in Chicago with longtime producer Brian Deck (who helmed Furman’s earliest rock’n’roll records). The result? A sound that’s orchestral, unfiltered, and cinematic—what one friend called “the coolest movie soundtrack of 1997.”

This album isn’t about observing chaos from a safe distance—it’s about being inside it. Furman and her band push their creative limits, layering strings, samples, and their decade-deep chemistry as musicians to build something intense, transcendent, and utterly fearless.

Furman’s Own Words on ‘Goodbye Small Head’

“These songs are vivid with overwhelm. They weren’t written from a place of reflection; they came to me in the eye of the storm. I started hemorrhaging songs after a mysterious illness left me bedridden for months. The music felt like an explosion, like something I had no choice but to let out.”

“This isn’t an album about going off the rails—it’s from inside the heart of someone who already has. I wanted to make music for when you’re alone in a room unraveling. A soundtrack for those moments when life strips away all your defenses.”

A Decade of Defiant, Genre-Bending Music

From the anthemic punk energy of Twelve Nudes to the sweeping, cinematic scope of All of Us Flames, Furman has continually redefined herself while staying true to her raw, unfiltered storytelling. Along the way, she’s scored Netflix’s Sex Education, written Lou Reed: Transformer for the 33 ⅓ book series, and collaborated with Sharon Van Etten on a tribute to Sinéad O’Connor.

Her music isn’t just heard—it’s felt. And ‘Goodbye Small Head’ is shaping up to be one of her most visceral records yet.
