Fay Milton of Savages is stirring things up with her brand-new project, ‘Goddess’, launching a self-titled debut album on May 30 via Bella Union. The announcement is already turning heads with the first single Shadows, featuring the ethereal vocals of Elena Tonra (of Ex:Re and Daughter), Hinako Omori on piano, and Ayse Hassan (of Savages) laying down an unforgettable bass groove.b
‘Goddess’ isn’t just an album—it’s a celebration of creative camaraderie and fearless collaboration. Fay, stepping out from behind the drums to embrace the producer’s chair, explains that Shadows perfectly captures the blend of darkness and light. Picture a track where thunderous energy meets a twinkling, delicate piano, and Elena’s vocals float in a space that’s both raw and refined.
The idea for ‘Goddess’ took root during a pause from her life with the two-time Mercury Prize-nominated Savages. With that chapter on hold, Fay felt a burning need to create something bigger—a project that honors the deep bonds formed among female and non-binary musicians in the vibrant London music scene. ‘Goddess’ is the culmination of years of planning, writing, and recording, and it radiates with emotional depth, resilience, vulnerability, and pure joy. Notably, the album features a revolving cast of vocalists, each bringing a unique flavor to the eclectic mix of post-punk, electronica, dream-pop, and indie-rock sounds.
‘Goddess’ also carries a personal message. Touring and the thrill of performing once filled Fay’s life, but a growing awareness of the climate crisis led her to co-found the activism charity Music Declares Emergency. This new perspective—balancing passion for music with a commitment to change—has redefined her creative journey. “I couldn’t really justify being someone who continues to jump on a plane every day,” she reflects. With the freedom of not touring, Fay has created a project where each track can explore new musical landscapes, featuring unexpected instruments like harps and strings.
More than just music, ‘Goddess’ is a heartfelt response to an uncertain world—a creative manifesto that finds solace and strength in collective artistry. It’s a bit like a musical experiment where genres serve as guidelines, and every featured artist is given the space to make each track truly their own. From the haunting opener Little Dark, with its introspective London night walk vibe and Shingai’s emotive vocals, to the electric intensity of Fuckboy and the playful allure of Animal, every track invites you to dive deeper into a rich tapestry of sound.
Fay has intentionally brought together only female and non-binary vocalists on this album—a nod to the brilliant diversity of voices that have inspired her throughout her career. It’s not about making a statement on gender; it’s about using it as a creative tool to showcase the artists who spark her imagination.
‘Goddess’ is more than just a collection of songs—it’s an immersive journey through the creative chapters of Fay’s life, blending musicianship, activism, and the unyielding power of artistic collaboration. With each track, ‘Goddess’ invites you to experience music in its most unrestrained and vibrant form.
