Get ready to be swept away by the raw, electrifying energy of ‘The Red Core’, the sophomore album from Hide and Shine, dropping this summer on June 20, 2025. Produced by Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5, The Replacements), this album promises to push the boundaries of everything you thought you knew about modern rock. But before you dive in, check out the first track, Hemorrhage and Heal, available now across all digital platforms.
A Sneak Peek Into ‘The Red Core’
Hemorrhage and Heal offers a heavy glimpse into the soul-stirring transformation that’s at the heart of ‘The Red Core’. The band describes the track as “a painful, yet beneficial transformation to come,” and it sets the stage for an album that blends haunting melodies with intense, muscular instrumentation. It’s both brutal and beautiful—a sonic journey that’s as raw as it is spiritual.
Matt Wallace, who helped shape the sound of ‘The Red Core’, says it best: “If there is a goddess of music, I hope she blesses this album. The world deserves to hear it.” There’s no denying the magic that happens when a producer with this much pedigree taps into the essence of a band like Hide and Shine.
A Band That Defies Boundaries
Hide and Shine’s sound is a genre-bending mix of post-punk, country rock, and alternative indie with a touch of something darker. They’ve been described as “Art Death Indie Post-Punk Country Rock Alternative”—an eclectic blend that somehow feels like it’s been around for decades, yet remains fresh and exhilarating. Drawing comparisons to the raw literary punk of The Replacements, the grunge influences of Dinosaur Jr., and the haunting introspection of Radiohead, Hide and Shine’s music is far from predictable.
Chris Kelly, the band’s primary songwriter, believes their sound isn’t just shaped by what they listen to but by the people they’ve played with and the experiences they’ve shared along the way. “The sound includes the people and experiences that are absorbed,” Kelly says, a sentiment that perfectly captures the essence of the band’s evolving identity.
The Journey So Far
The story of Hide and Shine began in 2022, when Kelly received a “psychic download” of 50 song ideas. He and drummer Michael Chambers, both veterans of New York’s 90s/2000s post-punk/art rock scene, connected over these demos and quickly realized they were onto something special. What started as a casual collaboration quickly snowballed into something more—an undeniable force that pushed them to form a band.
“I never thought we’d start a band,” Kelly admits, but as the songs came together, so did the realization: this was more than just noise—it was music with a life of its own.
Their debut album, Soft Machines, released in June 2024, captured the raw energy and potential of the band. But ‘The Red Core’ is where they really find their stride, refining their sound while continuing to defy easy categorization. With producer Matt Wallace’s magic touch, the new album promises to elevate their music to new heights.
A New Era for Hide and Shine
As ‘The Red Core’ takes shape, the band continues to evolve. In December 2024, David Andersen, a seasoned analog engineer, joined on bass, adding a new layer to the band’s dynamic. The new trio—Kelly, Chambers, and Andersen—created a more deliberate, focused sound that feels both fresh and familiar. The band also recently shifted their songwriting, abandoning some of the older tracks to focus on a new batch of songs, inspired by their growing chemistry as a band.
Kelly explains, “Songs don’t come from people, they come through people,” emphasizing the spiritual and collective nature of their music. For Hide and Shine, the work is far from just artistic expression—it’s a form of communication, a way to restore balance and harmony through sound.
