There are songs that hit you hard the first time you hear them—and then there’s I See a Darkness. For Imaad Wasif, this Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy classic wasn’t just a song—it was a cosmic revelation. Now, decades after first hearing it as a wide-eyed 23-year-old, Wasif has released a stunning cover that threads that same emotional depth into a gorgeous, raw reimagining.

Recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, Wasif’s version feels like a late-night confession under desert skies. It features Bobb Bruno (Best Coast) on bass and synths, and Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) on drums, both jumping into the session with zero overthinking—just pure musical instinct. The whole thing came together in a haze of late-night energy and emotion, one take capturing lightning in a bottle.

Songs like this don’t come around but once in a lifetime,” Wasif reflects. “It twists into your psyche and flips the whole scene. It makes you the narrator.”

This marks the first release on Wasif’s brand new imprint, Voidist Records, which will also re-release his back catalog and serve as the launchpad for all things future-Imaad. If this cover is any sign, Voidist is going to be a space for some deeply personal, soul-stirring sounds.

The accompanying music video, directed by Astara Calas, adds another dreamy layer. Shot in a single take, it follows a mysterious figure driving through an emotional fog. Think Wim Wenders meets nighttime noir—a moving portrait of longing, loss, and everything in between.

So, where can you see Imaad next?

Glad you asked—he’s hitting the road with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, not only joining them onstage as second guitarist, but also opening select dates with his own set. Don’t sleep on these shows:

More About Imaad

For the uninitiated: Imaad Wasif is a genre-bending singer-songwriter and guitarist whose sonic fingerprints are all over the underground. From fronting slowcore cult heroes lowercase, to psych-folk explorers alaska!, to composing with Karen O for Where the Wild Things Are, Wasif’s career has been a shape-shifting journey through emotion, distortion, and transcendence.

His solo work blends goth-folk, Indian ragas, and post-punk with searing, spacey guitar work—and it’s earned him a cult following of devoted listeners who come for the mood and stay for the meaning.
