This year will be\u00a0the fifth anniversary of Brooklyn Rock Lottery on December 6th at Baby’s All Right. And, today\u00a0they announced the first 15 hand picked musicians\u00a0including members of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Antony and the Johnsons, Gomez, Sebadoh, and Holy Fuck.<\/p>\n

Rock Lottery’s concept is\u00a0simple, but effective. Twenty-five musicians meet at 10:00am at the evening’s performance venue where they\u00a0are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups then go\u00a0to practice at different locations, and\u00a0have twelve hours to create a band name and 3-5 songs (with a 1 cover-song limit). The groups perform what they have created that evening in front of a live\u00a0audience.<\/p>\n

The twenty-five musicians included in this experiment are selected in an attempt to represent\u00a0varying\u00a0musical styles. This event intends to bring together many facets of the area’s music community that may seem incompatible as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The challenge for these musicians is to try and go beyond their personal and musical differences to\u00a0work together to create a unified group project that still contains the personal styles of each of the participants. This year’s proceeds from Brooklyn Rock Lottery 5\u00a0will\u00a0be donated to Harmony Program, a non-profit organization that brings after school music programs to communities with limited access to instrumental music education.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in an effort to raise money for Harmony Program, they\u00a0will be raffling prizes the evening of Brooklyn Rock Lottery from local vendors that include gift certificates from Baby’s All Right, The Levee, Allswell, Paulie Gee’s, Three Kings Tattoo, Kilo Bravo, Soft Spot, and Oddfellows. They\u00a0will also be giving away 2 weekend passes to Bonnaroo along with vinyl from 4AD, XL, Matador, Rough Trade, Domino, Secretly Canadian, Warp, Partisan, Daptone, Captured Tracks, Frenchkiss, and Mom+Pop.<\/p>\n

Instigated in 1997 by Good\/Bad Art Collective in Denton, TX, the Rock Lottery has become a highly anticipated music event in Denton, Seattle and Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
