Out May 5<sup>th<\/sup>,\u00a0the record is announcement of the return of the reloaded Toronto label\u2019s distinctive sound and aesthetic, as well as things to come from the label.<\/p>\n<p>In the youth-obsessed world of Rock N Roll,\u00a0Squirtgun Records\u00a0founder Lee Maslin might very well be considered a dinosaur, a notion he finds amusing.\u00a0<em>&#8220;I\u2019m not extinct yet!&#8221;<\/em> he protests, feeling his pulse. <em>&#8220;More like a wooly mammoth.&#8221;<\/em> He offers instead. <em>&#8220;Frozen in time. They thawed me out!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After laying dormant for over a decade, the label he began in 1995 has been resurrected to release a bunch of new recordings marking its 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary. The first of which, &#8216;Return Of Our Stupid Noise,&#8217; completes a trilogy of compilations whose legacy of uniting Canada\u2019s indie bands onto one disc has survived the intervening years. Jos\u00e9 Contreras &#8211; Labyrinthinium<\/p>\n<p>When Maslin put\u00a0Squirtgun\u00a0on ice in 2000, after releasing an EP by\u00a0Plastic Bag, it seemed like a timely opportunity to take stock, following five fruitful years, which yielded a staggering twenty-five releases from artists like\u00a0Hayden\u00a0and\u00a0Elevator To Hell.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Things were changing. Bands were breaking up. We sold out of our singles collection within a week and I had just done a deal with Nettwerk, which put the label in the black.&#8221;<\/em> Maslin recalls, referring to a 1998 arrangement that saw\u00a0&#8216;More Of Our Stupid Noise&#8217;\u00a0and\u00a0By Divine Right\u2019s classic \u2018All Hail Dischordia\u2019 re-released to a wider audience by\u00a0Nettwerk Records. <em>&#8220;It seemed like a good place to relax in the shade for a minute.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the arrival of kids &amp; a death in the family, that minute stretched on to more than a decade. Maslin doesn\u2019t seem phased.<em> &#8220;Ten years go by pretty quick.&#8221;<\/em> He laughs. <em>&#8220;I\u2019m ready to pick up the gauntlet again.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When asked why he chose to return to an industry very different than the one he left behind in 2000, Maslin grins.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018The fight for rock has not yet been won. There are a ton of amazing records out there that people need to hear. Rock N Roll hasn\u2019t languished, it\u2019s gotten stronger and more interesting than ever. I\u2019m thrilled to be working with our artists and doing what I can to promote this music. Rock is our national birthright!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When asked to elaborate on the name of his long-lived compilation series, Maslin thinks for a moment.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018It was kind of off-handedly suggested by a friend of mine at the time, but seemed to fit. It\u2019s unpretentious in a way that I like and it\u2019s inclusive. It\u2019s not My Stupid Noise.
