Canadian Music Week has\u00a0announced the winners of the\u00a016th Annual INDIES with INDIE88, which took place yesterday\u00a0at the\u00a0Phoenix Concert Theatre. Presented by\u00a0Indie88\u00a0and supported by the Ontario Media Development Corporation through the\u00a0Ontario Music Fund,\u00a0The INDIES\u00a0celebrate the best of both Canadian and international independent music.<\/p>\n

Experimental pop artist\u00a0Grimes\u00a0took home one of the evening’s top prizes, for album of the year, while Halifax alternative veterans\u00a0Wintersleep\u00a0were awarded single of the year for Amerika<\/em>. Toronto talent had a strong showing, with locals\u00a0The Strumbellas\u00a0and\u00a0Jazz Cartier\u00a0winning group of the year and rap artist of the year, respectively. International artist\/group of the year went to Southern rockers\u00a0Alabama Shakes. A full list of nominees and winners can be found below.<\/p>\n

The awards ceremony was hosted by\u00a0Indie88’s Raina Douris and featured special performances by\u00a0Wintersleep, The Strumbellas,\u00a0The Zolas,\u00a0and\u00a0Alberta Cross.<\/p>\n

A mix of votes from industry and the public were used to determine this year’s winners. The awards themselves, which come in the form of actual guitars, were supplied by Epiphone and Long & McQuade.<\/p>\n
