The album, their follow up to their well-regarded 2011 effort,\u00a0&#8216;In a Fung Day T!,&#8217;\u00a0is set to be\u00a0released via Bonsound and Slovenly Recordings\u00a0on October 14th. As well as the announcement, they also released their single <em>I Repeat Myself<\/em>, which you can take a listen to via Soundcloud below.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F276364752&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=8a8988\"><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recorded in their newly built Montreal studio, the track typifies\u00a0the LP&#8217;s\u00a0tightly-wound, goth-influenced synth punk, with vocalist Annie-Claude Desch\u00eanes delivering a ferocious performance, over a frenetic analog synth arrangement\u00a0that&#8217;s as indebted to the aesthetics of John Carpenter and Dario Argento\u00a0as it is to the primordial new wave of\u00a0Devo, the esoteric electronics of DAF, and the anarchic no wave of\u00a0Teenage Jesus &amp; The Jerks.<\/p>\n<p>In support of the release the band have announced tour dates in North America and Europe with Guerilla Toss, Future Punx and Belgian new wavers Le Prince Harry. Details can be found below.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\">More about Duchess Says?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Duchess Says\u00a0was formed in Montreal by members\u00a0of an obscure religious organization known as the\u00a0Church of Budgerigars. Composed of\u00a0Annie-Claude Desch\u00eanes (vocals, guitar, keytar),\u00a0Ismael Tremblay (keyboard, guitar),\u00a0Phillipe Cl\u00e9ment (guitar, gass) and\u00a0Simon Besr\u00e9 (drums), the group aspire\u00a0to ensure the faithful representation of the message of The Duchess,\u00a0their spiritual leader,\u00a0through &#8220;a\u00a0precise artistic dialogue.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From the first the band captured\u00a0the attention of audiences in Montreal\u00a0with their live shows, vicious and\u00a0theatrical\u00a0presentations\u00a0centered around the uncompromising conviction of Desch\u00eanes, whose performances were marked by a\u00a0devotional intensity, and the primacy she places upon physically contacting the audience and\u00a0pushing the boundaries of her expression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The local acclaim these early\u00a0shows engendered\u00a0gave way to wider recognition with\u00a0the release of the band&#8217;s\u00a0first two LPs, 2008&#8217;s &#8216;Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs&#8217;\u00a0and 2011&#8217;s<em>\u00a0<\/em>&#8216;In a Fung Day T!,&#8217;\u00a0which garnered\u00a0attention from outlets like Pitchfork, The New York Times, Brooklyn Vegan and Exclaim, and\u00a0led to\u00a0the band touring with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ariel Pink and The Black Lips, and sharing the stage with their no wave heroes James Chance &amp; The Contortions and Teenage Jesus &amp; The Jerks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a live review during this period the New York Times\u00a0described the band\u00a0as &#8220;not particularly mercantile,&#8221; a description that understates the fitful existence of a group\u00a0whose approach has always been subject to the same quixotic whims that guide their live sets. As such\u00a0it&#8217;s been 5 years since the release of their last LP, during which time\u00a0the band have engaged in a series of collaborations (Desch\u00eanes\u00a0appearing on Fucked Up&#8217;s Zodiac singles series, several members releasing an album under the name PyPy with members of Montreal&#8217;s Red Mass\/CPC Gangbangs, and Duchess Says releasing a split EP with Belgian synth punks Le Prince Harry), and set to work building the\u00a0studio where &#8216;Sciences Nouvelles&#8217;\u00a0was recorded, while keeping up a regular schedule of live dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The album itself contrasts the band&#8217;s characteristic vehemence with an icy electronic aesthetic,\u00a0that in places recalls acts like Goblin and Zombi, and takes forays into areas redolent of the more experimental impulses of\u00a0<em>Mask-<\/em>era Bauhaus, and LA goth\/deathrock acts like 45 Grave and Christian Death. The band&#8217;s writing process is generally centered around attempts to interpret visual art musically, and\u00a0Desch\u00eanes describes\u00a0this\u00a0album as being &#8220;influenced by science, but in an insipid way,&#8221; with the band taking inspiration from scientific diagrams and illustrations in the interest of\u00a0presenting a distorted reflection\u00a0of\u00a0&#8220;the\u00a0appearances\u00a0of science rather than the reality.&#8221; This manifests itself in a peculiar balance of tones that sees the band at their most disciplined and at their most aggressive, whether it&#8217;s Tremblay&#8217;s abrasive guitars and Deschenes&#8217; unhinged vocals\u00a0tearing\u00a0at the edges of the tightly sequenced new wave of <em>I Repeat Myself<\/em>, the gradual disintegration of the lockstep krautrock drive of <em>Inertia Part II<\/em>, or the the high-tempo Dead Kennedys-esque choruses\u00a0of <em>Pink Coffin<\/em> giving way to the synth squalled melt of it&#8217;s verses. It&#8217;s an approach that blends a\u00a0freewheeling openness to experimentation with an assuredness of execution\u00a0that speaks to the band&#8217;s experience, and to their devotion to uncovering the possibilities at the edges of their music, both on the record and in a live context.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span>Sciences Nouvelles\u00a0will be released on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hivemindpr.us10.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=04780c244c226dd8f0096243b&amp;id=a2f158425b&amp;e=998dd35436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Bonsound<\/a>\u00a0(CA) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Slovenly Recordings<\/a>\u00a0(RoW) on October 14th.
