Elverum &amp; Sun on March 24<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>2017. The album is a deeply personal and honest reaction to the death of Phil Elverum&#8217;\u0092s wife, the artist\u00a0Genevi\u00e8ve\u00a0Castr\u00e9e, last year. He has shared \u0093<em>Real Death<\/em>,\u0094 a candid expression of stark domestic grief that is unlike anything else in the Mount Eerie discography. Why tell you, stranger, about these personal moments,\u00a0the devastation and\u00a0the hanging love? Our\u00a0little family bubble was so sacred for so long.\u00a0We carefully held it behind a curtain of privacy when we\u0092d go out and do our art and music selves, too special to share, especially in our hyper-shared imbalanced times.\u00a0Then we had a baby and this barrier felt even more important.\u00a0(I still don\u0092t want to tell you our daughter\u0092s name.)\u00a0In May 2015, they told us Genevi\u00e8ve had a surprise bad cancer, advanced pancreatic, and the ground opened up.\u00a0\u0091What matters now?\u0092 we thought.\u00a0Then on July 9th 2016, she died at\u00a0home and I belonged to nobody anymore.\u00a0My internal moments felt like public property.\u00a0The idea that I could have a self or personal preferences or songs eroded down into an absurd old idea leftover from a more self-indulgent time before I was a hospital-driver, a caregiver, a child-raiser, a griever.\u00a0I am open now, and these songs poured out quickly in the fall, watching the days grey over and watching the neighbors across the alley tear down and rebuild their house.\u00a0I make these songs and put them out into the world just to multiply my voice saying that I love her.\u00a0I want it known.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u0093&#8221;DEATH IS REAL\u00a0could be the name of this album.\u00a0These cold mechanics of sickness and loss are real and inescapable, and can bring an alienating, detached sharpness.\u00a0 But it is not the thing I want to remember.\u00a0A crow did look at me.\u00a0There is an echo of Genevi\u00e8ve that still rings, a reminder of the love and infinity beneath all of this obliteration. Since\u00a0then,\u00a0he\u0092&#8217;s\u00a0produced two decades worth of records that span a wide spectrum from studio heavy atmospheric landscaping to simple raw songs.<\/p>\n<p>The Microphones project was nourished by and located within the community of artists around K Records in Olympia in the late 90s\/early 2000s, and Phil Elverum\u0092&#8217;s musical ideas were clearly the product of the flood of independent music in the NW during those years.<\/p>\n<p>After five albums. the project was renamed Mount Eerie just as the Microphones were getting some unexpected\u00a0attention from the widespread acclaim of \u0093the\u00a0Glow pt. 2\u0094 (2001).\u00a0The Mount Eerie recordings got weirder and broader, and Elverum left K Records and began releasing everything himself, ultimately building a self-contained small town operation in Anacortes called P.W. Elverum &amp; Sun. Radical self-sufficiency has been a theme and obsession; all all ages shows and never though a manager or booking agent, always self-recorded, hands on in all details.<\/p>\n<p>Mount Eerie\u0092&#8217;s albums have always aimed to push into new territory, both in sound and idea, but the thread of Elverum\u0092s voice has remained constant throughout, soft and human amid the wide\u00a0range of textures and worlds. Often the lyrics have attempted to grapple with big questions, the briefness and the smallness of human life being a running theme.\u00a0On occasion the music has been called \u0093black metal\u0094 (Wind\u0092s Poem, 2009), \u0093dream landscape\u0094 (Clear Moon, 2012), and \u0093raw and direct\u0094 (Lost Wisdom, 2008).<\/p>\n<p>The new album, &#8216;\u0093A Crow Looked At Me\u0094,&#8217; sounds closer to the latter; minimal instrumentation, no production, clear and heavy words right up front.\u00a0The difference here is the subject matter.\u00a0In 2015 Elverum&#8217;\u0092s wife, the French Canadian cartoonist and musician Genevi\u00e8ve Castr\u00e9e, was diagnosed with a bad cancer just after giving birth to their first child.\u00a0 She died a year later.\u00a0Elverum wrote and recored the album throughout the fall of 2016 in the same room where Genevi\u00e8ve died, using mostly her instruments; her guitar, her bass, her pick, her amp, her old family accordion, writing the words on her paper.<\/p>\n<p>The songs are about the brutal details of that experience, from the hospitalizations to the grieving, the specific domestic banalities that become existential in the context of such huge and abrupt loss.\u00a0These songs are not fun.\u00a0 They are pretty and\u00a0they are deep,\u00a0and\u00a0they\u00a0find a love that prevails beneath the\u00a0overwhelming and\u00a0real sorrow. It\u00a0is\u00a0unlike anything else in the Mount Eerie catalog\u00a0in\u00a0its unvarnished expressions\u00a0of personal grief,\u00a0metaphor-free.<\/p>\n<p>The writing draws\u00a0inspiration\u00a0from Karl Ove Knausgaard, Julie Doiron, Gary Snyder, Sun Kil Moon, and Joanne Kyger (whose poem \u0093Night Palace\u0094 is on the album\u0092s cover).\u00a0The sound was influenced by the spare production of the\u00a01996 Will\u00a0Oldham\u00a0album\u00a0&#8216;\u0093Arise Therefore&#8217;\u0094.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Mount Eerie has announced the details of their new album,\u00a0&#8216;A Crow Looked At Me,&#8217;\u00a0which\u00a0will be released via\u00a0P.W.
