In parallel,\u00a0Canada celebrates its 150th year, Montr\u00e9al f\u00eates its 375th and Expo 67 the city\u0092’s futuristic beacon of innovation, commemorates its 50th; all elements that will form the backbone of this year\u0092’s festival. The fundamental DNA of the festival will continue to express values of discovery, revelation and community, emphasizing premieres, exclusive appearances and artistic ingenuity in fields of creation that continue to mutate and amaze.<\/p>\n

Now situated in the beating heart of the late summer, MUTEK expands its free outdoor offerings on the\u00a0Esplanade de la Place des Arts\u00a0from Tuesday to Sunday. This edition\u0092s playground will also include the\u00a0Monument-National\u00a0as festival headquarters, the\u00a0M\u00e9tropolis\u00a0for a full slate of diverse and big room programming, and the\u00a0Society for Arts and Technology (SAT),\u00a0the destination for more intimate, cutting-edge works, including events in the dome of the\u00a0Satosphere.<\/p>\n

Program\u00a0Highlights<\/h5>\n

DAPHNI all\u00a0night long\u00a0on Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n

MUTEK opens the\u00a0M\u00e9tropolis\u00a0on Wednesday night with an exclusive, multi-hour set starring\u00a0DAPHNI\u00a0\u0096the experimental house and afro-funk solo project of Dan\u00a0Snaith\u00a0from Caribou. The sole artist in the room all night, he will conduct the evening from a\u00a0centre\u00a0perch on the floor with custom scenography, where he can cast an epic spell with his refined sense of pace and drama.<\/p>\n

Red Bull Music Academy<\/strong>\u00a0x MUTEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Red Bull Music Academy returns as a partner for two major nights on Thursday and Friday at\u00a0M\u00e9tropolis. Taking a cue from their\u00a0Drone Activity in Progressevent held last year while the Academy was in Montr\u00e9al, Thursday night promises serious doses of drone and\u00a0heaviosity\u00a0with the full spectrum overtones of\u00a0Sarah Davachi, claustrophobic atmospheres and grid-resistant rhythm from\u00a0FIS,\u00a0with more masterful and dangerous sound designers and\u00a0noiseniks\u00a0to be added.<\/p>\n

As has become Friday night tradition, the program flexes its contemporary techno muscle with live sets that highlight the vivid and\u00a0transportive\u00a0power of the form. Already, two RBMA alumni will command the stage: a well road-tested, solo live set from\u00a0Montr\u00e9aler\u00a0Marie Davidson, who\u0092s returning from a serious year of touring \u0097 and a hallucinatory unfolding from\u00a0Aurora\u00a0Halal\u00a0that will oscillate between the visceral and blissful. This is only the first hint at this program with much more to be announced in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u00a0night\u00a0at M\u00e9tropolis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Saturday all-nighter running until dawn at\u00a0M\u00e9tropolis\u00a0is a carefully orchestrated reverie of long-form\u00a0grooviness\u00a0and a kind of crescendo point in the trajectory of the festival. Trippy French producer\u00a0Rroxyore\u00a0makes her live debut in Montr\u00e9al, while an exclusive, rare visit from\u00a0Perlon\u00a0label head, Panorama Bar resident and notorious DJ\u00a0ZIP\u00a0will drive the crowd until lights up.<\/p>\n

A\/VISIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

MUTEK’\u0092s signature program of performative audiovisual works, taking place in the immaculate theatre setting of the Monument-National once again puts the emphasis on extraordinary, precedent-setting artistic practices. This year exalts projects from several high-ranking wizards in this mercurial and magical milieu.<\/p>\n

Artist-engineer-mad scientist\u00a0Robert Henke\u00a0brings the third iteration of his\u00a0Lumi\u00e8re<\/em>\u00a0performance to the festival, an always evolving build on his unique audiovisual language \u0096 articulating the poetic and affecting correlations between data, frequencies and lasers to dazzling and three-dimensional effect.\u00a0Montr\u00e9aler\u00a0Herman Kolgen, himself always inventing new forms of dramatic and conceptual A\/V, launches his latest ‘Impakt’\u00a0\u0097<\/em>inspired by a personal accident, it plays with notions of vulnerability and reactions to shock, using ballistics, virtual projectiles and data. Montr\u00e9al collective\u00a0artificiel\u00a0deliver two different world premieres this year. A commission for MUTEK,\u00a0Alexandre Burton\u00a0& Julien Roy\u00a0unveil their brand new, souped-up, extreme real-time, audiovisual instrument with\u00a0Three Pieces\u00a0With\u00a0Titles<\/em>. Scenographer\u00a0Jimmy Lakatos\u00a0marries his elegant, reflective laser forms with new and original music by Mexican composer\u00a0Marco\u00a0in a piece called\u00a0Nebula<\/em>. This year the festival welcomes\u00a0Michela\u00a0Pelusio & Glenn Vervliet\u00a0for a mesmerizing performance of their helical, sculptural, optical-acoustic instrument. More fantastical audiovisual experiences are still to be added.<\/p>\n

Debuts\u00a0and\u00a0Discoveries<\/strong><\/p>\n

International newcomers this year arrive from all corners of the planet. From Ecuador,\u00a0Nicola\u00a0Cruz\u00a0and his mix of indigenous folk and electrified cumbia makes his debut in Canada, as does young Australian, soul-jazz-funk-house keyboard player and producer\u00a0Harvey Sutherland. From Japan, the festival welcomes veteran producer\u00a0Kuniuki\u00a0Takahashi,\u00a0also\u00a0know\u00a0as Koss, whose formidable discography spans delicate string and piano works, complex and elegant jazz influenced house, long form\u00a0improv\u00a0and techno \u0097 and the critically acclaimed downtempo, vintage African influenced producer\u00a0Anchorsong, whose live reputation precedes him in the UK where he has been based. German duo\u00a0African\u00a0808\u00a0(featuring Dirk\u00a0Leyers\u00a0ex-Closer\u00a0Musik) bring their deferential, globetrotting, polyrhythmic electronic creations and sweaty live show to the festival.
