Farm Music is\u00a0a new label run from Farm Music studio in Oxfordshire, known for recording many acclaimed alternative albums since its inception in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve given us a taste of the new album with the single\/video for <em>Cylindrical Fire Escapes<\/em>, which you can watch via YouTube below.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AcTULtcBp1k?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The video was conceived and created by Finnish visual artist Jussi Virkkumaa: &#8220;It could be the material left to cutting room floor from the movie &#8216;Burning Love&#8217; and instructional video about how to avoid housefire when using broken videoprojector?<\/p>\n<p>Because I don&#8217;t really know what Cylindrical fire-escapes means in this context other than a wish of someone not suffering from love and trying to offer a quick solution which I think would be falling in love again, I wanted to create a kind of visualizer for that.\u00a0There are those firetruck- or policecar emergency lights rolling.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also about of rhythm and shape, based on Hans Richter&#8217;s old dadaist\/avant-garde movie named Rhythmus 21.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe in one sentence: It\u00b4s an experimental visual homemade lovestory. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From its opening chords, the album centre-piece\u00a0hints at the glacial grandeur to follow.\u00a0Co-pilgrim\u00a0have come to be known for arching melodies, dulcet harmonies and earworm instrumentation, and whilst present and correct here, are augmented further by a hitherto untapped sense of space and ambition.<\/p>\n<div><b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">More about &#8216;Moon Lagoon&#8217;?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Farm Music is a new label run from Farm Music studio in Oxfordshire, known for recording many acclaimed alternative albums since its inception in 1999 (alumni include Black Nielson, Goldrush, Danny &amp; the Champions of the World, Electric Soft Parade, The Dreaming Spires, Ralfe Band &amp; Co-pilgrim). &#8216;Still Life Hear Me&#8217; by Black Nielson was the first of these back in 2000, so it seems fitting that the label&#8217;s first release should be from ex-Black Nielson frontman Mike Gale&#8217;s present combo,\u00a0Co-pilgrim. This will be their fourth album since 2013 \u2013 Gale having released two solo albums and two album collaborations during an astonishingly fertile period \u2013 and quality control is as tight as ever.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Opening track <em>Turn It Around<\/em> is a clear statement of intent. Gentle acoustic strums swept along by synth and then blown away by power-fuzz guitar; a different Co-pilgrim to the harmony-pop exponents of yore, grittier and more robust, informed by past travails (Gale&#8217;s recent loss of a parent and an often debilitating agoraphobia) yet resolute and optimistic in pursuit of the yearned-for mythical utopia of the &#8216;moon lagoon&#8217;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Both the second song, <em>You&#8217;ll Look Pretty As a Picture When The Acid Rain Hits Ya<\/em> and title track, <em>Moon Lagoon<\/em> feed 90s American alt-rock through Co-pilgrim&#8217;s pop filter (check the almost Kim Deal-esque BVs). However, it is first single and album centre-piece <em>Cylindrical Fire Escapes<\/em> which really showcases the ambition of the record; producer &amp; multi-instrumentalist Joe Bennett (Dreaming Spires, Goldrush, Saint Etienne, Danny &amp; the Champs) paints an ethereal soundscape of swirling synths and chiming guitars, driven by Andy Reaney&#8217;s rolling bass and bursts of pulsating rhythm from drummer\/percussionist Mike Monaghan (Willie J Healey, Gaz Coombes,\u00a0Man Without Country,\u00a0Ralfe Band), and beautifully transcended at the finale by Claire Bennett&#8217;s soaring vocals. The atmospheric production is perfectly represented by visual artist Jussi Virkkumaa&#8217;s elegantly tessellating video which accompanies the track.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">Side two is more introverted, the delicately heartstring-tugging <em>Thank My Stars<\/em>, preceding the baroque-pop of <em>I&#8217;m Not A Wallflower I&#8217;m The Wall<\/em> which then opens out into the weary psychedelia of <em>Digging Holes In The Whites Of Your Eyes<\/em>. Gale&#8217;s lyrical dexterity is as usual to the fore, underscoring a sophistication developed through years of honing his craft as a songwriter and a keen ear for a memorable tune.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium;\">As the band meander away into the mythical &#8216;Moon Lagoon&#8217; on joyous horn-driven closer <em>Wouldn&#8217;t You Like To Dance?<\/em>, it would seem churlish not to join them&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Co-pilgrim\u00a0will\u00a0release a new album\u00a0&#8216;Moon Lagoon&#8217;\u00a0on June 23 via Farm Music available\u00a0digitally and on CD \/ LP\u00a0 (&#8216;Lagoon blue&#8217; vinyl).
