This is the first taste of her forthcoming album, which will be released later this year. Waves Break began with a fascination with fearlessness in people (especially females) who love surfing, skateboarding or any sport where they get beat up and dive right back in,&#8221;<\/em> says\u00a0K Michelle Dubois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The lyrics evolved to be metaphorical as well as staying on topic while blending in double-meaning word play &#8211; &#8216;I keep you close to my chest&#8217; and &#8216;you know where the sharks prey&#8217;. The instrumentation of Waves Break has an early Duran Duran, Bowie, Gang of Four vibe.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new single follows up her third solo release\u00a0&#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kmichelledubois.bandcamp.com\/album\/harness\" target=\"_blank\">Harness<\/a>&#8216;, as well as the singles\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jg1Qu3C1wiY\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Wild Weed<\/em><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/user-540918002\/1-orchid\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Orchid<\/em><strong> <\/strong><\/a>and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9bQwJJ1gr5k\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Love and Only Love<\/em><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>DuBois also recently collaborated with Wales-based post-punk dreampop artist\u00a0Lights That Change\u00a0on the single\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lightsthatchange.bandcamp.com\/track\/untold\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Untold<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of DuBois&#8217; solo output intertwines classic power-pop with 90s college rock, &#8216;Harness&#8217; boasts a heftier sonic tone than her previous album\u00a0&#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2dnfJUDuOY0hsYaTe5bMtT?si=T_ffSKKLTJugWZUaS4bMLA\" target=\"_blank\">Astral Heart<\/a>&#8216; (2016) with its bouncy rhythms, jangly guitars and sing-song charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in Atlanta, GA, Dubois&#8217; counts Blondie&#8217;s &#8216;Autoamerican&#8217; and Divinyls among her influences, along with Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, and Fever Ray. DuBois&#8217;s live band includes\u00a0Chandler Rentz\u00a0(drums),\u00a0Jim Prible\u00a0(bass),\u00a0Andr\u00e9 Griffin\u00a0(keys) and\u00a0Dan Dixon\u00a0(guitar), who also recorded, produced and mastered this album at RCDC studio in Atlanta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>K Michelle DuBois got into music very young, building harmonies to pass the time during the family&#8217;s frequent road trips. DuBois began writing her own material as a teenager in Nashville after receiving a bass guitar for Christmas. She crafted her early songs on bass, a Yamaha synthesizer and a drum machine in her parents&#8217; four-track studio, but a flood of creative possibilities came upon discovering open-tuning on acoustic guitar, thereafter solidifying her commitment to songwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After forming her first band\u00a0Ultrababyfat and releasing\u00a0<strong>&#8216;<\/strong>Silver Tones Smile&#8217;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(1998), the group&#8217;s infectious pop-punk sound garnered national attention, leading to opening slots for numerous noteworthy acts\u00a0Pavement\u00a0and\u00a0PJ Harvey, and a 2001 stint on\u00a0The Warped Tour<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>as one of the few female-led bands showcased in the festival&#8217;s lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the band disbanded in 2005, DuBois formed\u00a0Luigi\u00a0to explore her more progressive, art-rock leanings. After seven years together and ample critical acclaim, she re-emerged as a solo artist under the tempered guidance of producer\u00a0Ben Price<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at Studilaroche, releasing her debut album\u00a0&#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2YHTK0haAv7YNeAjf8wV1l?si=T_ffSKKLTJugWZUaS4bMLA\" target=\"_blank\">Lux Capone<\/a>&#8216; in 2012.
