Faced with making the follow-up to 2014\u2019s plush\u00a0\u2018Chiaroscuro,\u2019 Horses\u2019s Maria Lind\u00e9n decided to take the time to make something different, with an emphasis on instrumental, cinematic music. As she watched a collection of favourite films on her computer (sound muted) and made her own soundtrack sketches, these sonic workouts gradually evolved into something more:\u00a0<em>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I felt an urge to add vocals and lyrics,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says\u00a0Lind\u00e9n,\u00a0<em>\u201cthat I realized I was making a new I Break Horses album.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That album is\u00a0\u2018Warnings,\u2019 an intimate and sublimely expansive return that, as its recording suggests,\u00a0sets its own pace with the intuitive power of a much-loved movie. And, as\u00a0the\u00a0title suggests,\u00a0the\u00a0sumptuous sound worlds \u2013 dreamy mellotrons, haunting loops, analogue synths \u2013 and layered lyrics crackle with immersive dramatic tensions on many levels.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt\u2019s not a political album,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Lind\u00e9n,\u00a0<em>\u201cthough it relates to the alarmist times we live in. Each song is a subtle warning of something not being quite right.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><br><br>As Lind\u00e9n notes, the process of making\u00a0\u2018Warnings\u2018\u00a0involved different kinds of dramas.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt has been some time in the making. About\u00a0six\u00a0years, involving several studios, collaborations that didn\u2019t work out, a crashed hard drive with about two years of work, writing new material again instead of trying to repair it. New studio recordings, erasing everything, then recording most of the album myself at home\u2026\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the pay-off for her long-haul immersion is clear from statement-of-intent album opener <em>Turn<\/em>, a waltzing kiss-off to an ex swathed in swirling synths over nine emotive minutes. On <em>Silence<\/em>, Lind\u00e9n suggests deeper sorrows in the interplay of serene surface synths, hypnotic loops and elemental images: when she sings \u201c<em>I feel a shiver,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0you feel it, too.\u00a0Elsewhere, on three instrumental interludes, Lind\u00e9n\u2019s intent to experiment with sound and structure is clear. Meanwhile, there are art-pop songs here more lush than any she has made. <em>I\u2019ll Be the Death of You<\/em> occupies a middle ground between Screamedelica and early OMD, while <em>Neon Lights<\/em> brings to mind Kraftwerk on\u00a0Tron\u2019s light grid. <em>I Live At Night<\/em> slow-burns like a song made for night-time LA drives; <em>Baby You Have Travelled for Miles without Love in Your Eyes<\/em> is an electronic lullaby spiked with troubling needle imagery. <em>Death Engine<\/em>\u2019s dark-wave dream-pop provides an epic centerpiece of sorts, before the vocoder hymnal of closer <em>Depression Tourist<\/em> arrives like an epiphany, the clouds parting after a long, absorbing journey.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Lind\u00e9n,\u00a0\u2018Warnings\u2019 is a remarkable re-routing of a journey begun when I Break Horses\u2019s debut album,\u00a0\u2018Hearts\u2019\u00a0(2011), drew praise from\u00a0Pitchfork,\u00a0The Guardian,\u00a0NME,\u00a0The Independent\u00a0and others for its luxurious grandeur and pulsing sense of art-pop life. With the electro-tangents of 2014\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Chiaroscuro,\u2019 Lind\u00e9n forged a new, more ambitious voice with total confidence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new friend on\u00a0\u2018Warnings\u2019 is US producer\/mixing engineer Chris Coady, whose\u00a0graceful way with dense sound (credits include Beach House, TV on the Radio) was not the sole reason\u00a0Lind\u00e9n\u00a0invited him to mix the album.\u00a0<em>\u201cBefore reaching out to Chris I read an interview where he said, \u2018I like to slow things down. Almost every time I love the sound of something slowed down by half, but sometimes 500% you can get interesting shapes and textures.\u2019 And I just knew he\u2019d be the right person for this album.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>If making\u00a0\u2018Warnings\u2018\u00a0was a slow process, so be it: that steady gestation was a price worth paying for its lavish accretions of detail and meaning, where secrets aplenty await listeners eager to immerse themselves.\u00a0<em>\u201cNowadays, the attention span equals nothing when it comes to how most people consume music,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Lind\u00e9n\u00a0says.\u00a0<em>\u201cAnd it feels like songs are getting shorter, more \u2018efficient\u2019. I felt an urge to go against that and create an album journey from start to finish that takes time and patience to listen to.
