Drawing on a myriad of influences from ambient, pop, electronic and R&amp;B, the band give us another teaser before its release with a haunting new track <em>Let\u2019s Go<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said about the track, \u201c<em>LET\u2019S GO\u00a0is\u00a0a nihilist party song. A toast to the death of meaning\u2013\u2013to giving up and being\u00a0free.\u00a0The title is\u00a0named after a line in Beckett\u2019s\u00a0Waiting for Godot\u2013\u2013\u201cLet\u2019s go.\u00a0They do\u00a0not move.\u201d It\u2019s a funny track celebrating inertia and futility, the absurd\u00a0and the arbitrary.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to <em>Let\u2019s Go<\/em> via SoundCloud below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\".gif - Let&#039;s Go by The Analog Vault\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F750258808&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500&#038;secret_token=s-VOB1a\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>.gif have earned critical comparisons to the likes of Bjork, Yukimi Nagano, The xx and Portishead, but the illustrious pair have managed to retain a fresh and unique dynamic to their chimerical sound, one that proved so compelling that the pair began filling a void of their own making within the Singaporean music scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band&#8217;s previous output garnered acclaim from the likes of VICE, Earmilk, Indie Shuffle and FasterLouder, .gif&#8217;s sophomore LP\u00a0\u2018Hail Nothing\u2019 still showcases the haunting vocals, deft lyricism and obsidian production that has become their distinctive sound. The album is named after a line in Ernest Hemingway\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Clean Well Lighted Place<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u2013 \u201c<em>Hail nothing\u00a0full of nothing, nothing is with thee.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavily informed by postmodern literature, film and theatre, .gif\u2019s work has always grappled with themes of alienation, displacement, loneliness; the impossibility of forming any real human connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In<em>\u00a0\u2018<\/em>Hail Nothing,\u2019 however, .gif \u201cimagine Sisyphus happy\u201d, as Albert Camus famously wrote in\u00a0<em>The Myth of Sisyphus<\/em>. Where their previous work\u2013\u2013\u2018saudade<em>\u2019 EP<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018soma<em>\u2019 LP<\/em>\u2013\u2013had been defined by a rainy\u2013day despair and a longing for purpose, their new album is an aggressive attempt to break free from melancholy. A more joyful approach to existential dread,\u00a0\u2018Hail Nothing\u2019\u00a0embraces the absence\u2013\u2013or inscrutability of\u2013\u2013meaning as something not cruel or suffocating, but liberating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darker, grittier and bolder than ever before, .gif now treads a unique balance between trip\u2013hop, post punk and slow driving techno. The album confronts the listener with raw, dirty synthesisers and vigorous arpeggiation, the nuance of Din&#8217;s sonorous beats enhanced and brought to life by Jason Tan&#8217;s savvy production work. Their robust instrumentation plays magnificently into Weish\u2019s spellbinding vocal melodies, her voice evocatively alternating between tautness and ache, reckless abandon, and sombre poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for their unexpected and form\u2013bending collaborations, .gif have often worked with artists across different disciplines, from poets to playwrights. Here in\u00a0\u2018Hail Nothing,\u2019 the pair introduce two exciting first\u2013time collaborators. The opening track <em>Only Yours<\/em> showcases the iconic vocals and rich lyricism of celebrated multi-disciplinary artist and local luminary Bani Haykal of B\u2013Quartet. Later in the record, <em>DONE (done done)<\/em> features prize-winning British poet and spoken word artist Usaama Minhas, whom .gif shared a lineup with in Cambridge during their 2018 UK tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aptly expressing the spirit of the album in the chorus of their first single, <em>Let\u2019s Go<\/em>, .gif urges us to free all language from meaning in favour of enjoying the mere sound of words on our tongues.
