Copenhagen\u2019s\u00a0Iceage – Elias Bender R\u00f8nnenfelt, Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Surrballe Wieth,\u00a0and\u00a0Dan Kj\u00e6r Nielsen\u00a0– have announced their fifth album,\u00a0\u2018Seek Shelter,\u2019 out\u00a0May 7th\u00a0via Mexican Summer.\u00a0They have shared a new single\/video, Vendetta<\/em>, which follows their recent track The Holding Hand<\/em>. Enrolling\u00a0Sonic Boom<\/a>\u00a0(Pete Kember of Spacemen 3) to produce the record and an additional guitarist in the form of\u00a0Casper Morilla <\/strong>Fernandez, \u2018Seek Shelter\u2019 sees Iceage\u2019s propulsive momentum pushing them in new, expansive, ecstatic directions. A decade on from their first record, Iceage continue to harness their lives together through music.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00f8nnenfelt casts the influence of Kember, the band\u2019s first outside producer, as that of a sparring partner, another wayward mind to bounce ideas off of (along with\u00a0Shawn Everett, who mixed the record) to help shape the sound. For Seek Shelter\u2019s story of scorched-earth salvation, Iceage\u2019s songwriting embraces conventional structures more conspicuously than it has in the past. The dirge-like drone that opens the record gives way to a wall of reverb that sounds fuller and brighter than anything they’ve committed to tape, signaling a clarity of clouds breaking.\u00a0The Lisboa Gospel Collective, who joined the band for two tracks on the final day in the studio, provide a new scale to R\u00f8nnenfelt\u2019s incantations.\u00a0

As with all Iceage\u2019s previous albums, R\u00f8nnenfelt stowed away for a set period of weeks and wrote the lyrics for Seek Shelter in one shot. Here, his lyrics reach grand heights despite its classic opacity \u2014 he sings of taking shelter, of tranquil affections that threaten to combust, and of a limp-wristed god with a cavalcade of devotees in search of relief. His expressionist imagery consistently hinges on the divine,\u00a0 a natural result of his desire to take a kernel of ordinary emotion and, as he explains, \u201cblow it up like a balloon.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>

On the slow-grooving new single, Vendetta<\/em>, an electronic beat and blues signatures break through to the front. R\u00f8nnenfelt comments, \u201cCrime is the undercurrent that runs through everything. If you don\u2019t see it, you\u2019re not looking. In its invincible politics, it is the glue that binds it all together.\u00a0 \u2018Vendetta\u2019 is an impartial dance along the illicit lines of infraction.\u201d<\/em>

The accompanying video features the band, as well as actor\u00a0Zlatko Buri\u0107. Director\u00a0Jonas Bang\u00a0explains, \u201cWe wanted it to be less 1:1 story and more short format collage-ish – like if you flick through a chapter in a book reading a bit here and there.\u201d<\/em>
