The song and video relay a stirring sonic snapshot of the angst felt and coping mechanisms tapped when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the world\u2019s desperate need for vaccine distribution. Listen to the single via SoundCloud below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World&#039;s A Bitch by Church of Trees featuring Carole Pope by Bernard Frazer\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F962440087&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mixed and mastered by Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Courtney Love, Chris Cornell, Lindsay Buckingham\/Fleetwood Mac), <em>World\u2019s a Bitch<\/em> is the lead track from the Ottawa-based band\u2019s forthcoming EP,\u00a0<em>PAUSE<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 available this March from band members Bernard Frazer, Tara Hope, and Allison Stanton.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also featured on the track, the pairing of Pope with Church of Trees came by way of former Spoons\/Honeymoon Suite keyboardist Rob Preuss; while working directly but separately with each artist, he had a lightbulb moment, and suggested Frazer write something that might suit Pope\u2019s voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>They say to never meet your heroes because they\u2019ll disappoint, but Carole was in such fine form,\u201d <\/em>Church of Trees\u2019 lead Frazer shares, brimming with excitement on his experience with the rock icon. <em>\u201cShe was delightful!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>I\u2019ve been a fan of Rough Trade since the 70s, and Carole\u2019s voice and lyrics have always resonated with me,<\/em>\u201d he continues. \u201c<em>To write for such a legend was a dream come true; I leapt at the chance, and couldn\u2019t believe she liked it!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With her hit <em>High School Confidential<\/em> recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Carole Pope is the award-winning vocalist of Rough Trade, and also known for leveraging her iconic status to openly table discussion around LGBTQ+ sexuality in her lyrics, starting in the \u201870s. <em>World\u2019s a Bitch<\/em> is one of several musical projects Pope is currently working on; most especially, she is dedicated to\u00a0<em>Attitude: The Musical<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 a stage production based on the life of her late brother Howard, a New York-based musician who passed away of AIDS in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotionally-driven in many corners of her inspiration, Pope thinks \u201c<em>the song encapsulates how we\u2019re all feeling about being locked down\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>And, you can dance to it!\u201d<\/em> she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the <em>World\u2019s a Bitch<\/em> video<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>As it would turn out, Preuss ultimately connected the dots for the <em>World\u2019s a Bitch<\/em> video as well; producer and director Morgan Elliot of Suddenly SeeMore Productions is a school chum of his and reached out after hearing the song. \u201c<em>She suggested she could put together a music video to capture the feeling of the track,\u201d Frazer explains, \u201cso Rob put her in touch with me.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We chatted about a DIY video I had previously done for our song, End of Days,\u201d<\/em> he continues. \u201c<em>I had sourced a lot of news footage about Covid for it \u2014 images of hospitals overflowing, empty streets, rising numbers, and such. Morgan suggested we use similar footage coupled with imagery of Carole on the streets, singing.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>At first, Morgan and the director of photography, Ivan VerLaan, ultimately decided they\u2019d have better results if Carole was in the studio, and it was then Carole\u2019s idea to source footage from fans showing their own related burnout scenes. Morgan really championed the idea and, between Carole\u2019s and Church of Trees\u2019 fans, we had several hundred entries within a week.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>It was so great of these folks to let us inside their lives like this, and show us how they are dealing with their own personal struggles around Covid.<\/em> <em>This, and they were so incredibly creative!\u201d<\/em> Watch the video via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bnXQ5Io8iAM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Underscoring the universal fact of an outsized populous responding to \u2014 and living through \u2014 a global pandemic, footage poured in from all corners of the globe, including the UK, Sweden, Germany, Greece, and Japan \u2014 not to mention all across North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it wasn\u2019t just friendly fan faces filling the screen; Church of Trees members Frazer, Hope and Stanton \u2014 as well as Preuss and Zadorozny \u2014 are also featured. \u201c<em>Everyone really embraced the concept and sent back stellar footage,\u201d<\/em> Frazer says. \u201c<em>It was clear the video was about \u2018being under lockdown\u2019 and how each of us were handling it, so there was no need for generic footage anymore. The fans were telling the story \u2014 their story \u2014 and that made so much more sense.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Morgan worked with Frank Cassano to assemble the final cut, and his edits not only tell the story of Covid burnout, but with humour.
