The video was directed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/rxlf4e\/3m9fkn\/vs8wuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G\u00f6k\u00e7e Erdem<\/a>\u00a0who said, &#8220;<em>The video is about reminiscing about a person from one\u2019s past, going through shared memories and reflecting on one\u2019s journey.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tearjerker&#8217;s Micah Bonte adds, &#8220;<em>Deep End was birthed as an improvised riff at a crowded (pre-COVID) housewarming party in 2019. It\u2019s the sort of creative moment that\u2019s usually lost to time and hazy memories. But after discovering a friend\u2019s Instagram story that captured the riff, we were able to use it as a foundation to build a classic Tearjerker song that feels like it should be rolling over the end credits of a movie.&#8221;<\/em> You can watch the <em>Deep End<\/em> video via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kZooRsisfhs?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The release of <em>Deep End<\/em> follows up the EP&#8217;s pre-release singles <em>Be You<\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/tearjerker-share-new-single-lost\/\" title=\"Tearjerker share new single \u2018Lost\u2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Lost<\/em><\/a> which can be found on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/rxlf4e\/3m9fkn\/75axuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital streaming services.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More about the \u2018Deep End\u2019 EP<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The three members of Tearjerker (Micah Bonte, Trevor Hawkins and Taylor Shute) have been passing bedroom recordings back and forth over email since the band&#8217;s inception in 2008. As of 2021, not much of that process has changed. Sure, a brief moment near the end of 2019 saw the band attempting to shake things up by escaping to a quiet little cottage in North Ontario. It\u2019s where they began writing and recording a handful of songs with all three members actually in the same room, something they had rarely done. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, the group was forced to cancel their plans to record an entire album this way, and\u2014for better or worse\u2014returned to their original methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the beginnings of those cottage recordings, the band slowly pieced together their latest EP,\u00a0\u2018Deep End\u2019. The result is a quick rip through the band\u2019s consciousness, revealing a hazy landscape that\u2019s half lush gardens, and half on fire. But rather than slipping away into the ether, the record is firmly connected to the reality of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musically, a Tearjerker composition is never truly finished. Many of Tearjerker\u2019s arrangements begin as demos, often voice-memos hastily recorded by Taylor or Micah on a phone. Other times there really is no demo at all. A song might begin as a beat or loop of percussion created by Trevor, with the very first inkling of a song only appearing during the recording process itself. In either case, layer upon layer of instrumentation is added over long periods of time, sometimes up until moments before mastering. The band embraces this iterative exercise, only allowing for brief moments of escape from Taylor\u2019s constant weaving of instruments throughout each track. But those moments are not a void space. Trevor\u2019s addition of samples and found sounds produce an often unsettling world that listeners are transported into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this wall of sound, memorable hooks and melodies emerge, breaking through the noise, gripping the listener and refusing to let go even long after the song has finished. As Pitchfork wrote of the band\u2019s music: \u201c<em>Hear it once, and feel it become part of your under-the-breath murmuring for the rest of your day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically, the tracks on\u00a0\u2018Deep End\u2019 explore themes of love, loss and chance paranormal encounters. <em>Poor Me <\/em>describes an embarrassing out-of-body experience, and <em>Little Ghost<\/em> encourages the listener to look inward for personal growth, but also to the sky in case a UFO zips by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of a cache of demos recorded by Shute in 2020, <em>Lost<\/em> is a pop song for slackers. Bonte\u2019s vocals, however, include a warning for multitaskers, \u201c<em>one thing at a time, doin\u2019 so much you\u2019re gonna lose your mind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0closer and title track on \u2018Deep End\u2019 was birthed as a drunkenly improvised riff at a crowded (pre-COVID) housewarming party in 2019. It\u2019s the fleeting sort of creative moment that\u2019s usually lost to time if not recorded in some way. But after discovering a friend\u2019s instagram story that captured the riff, the band were able to use it as a foundation to build a song.
