{"id":37925,"date":"2022-03-29T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T16:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=37925"},"modified":"2022-03-27T08:04:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-27T12:04:55","slug":"mush-return-with-get-on-yer-soapbox-announce-new-album-down-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=37925","title":{"rendered":"Mush return with \u2018Get On Yer Soapbox\u2019 + announce new album \u2018Down Tools\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Leeds, UK-based art-rock group,\u00a0Mush\u00a0have returned with the new single,\u00a0<em>Get On Yer Soapbox<\/em> alongside announcing details of what will be their third album in as many years titled\u00a0\u2018Down Tools,\u2019 out\u00a0July 8\u00a0via\u00a0Memphis Industries.\u00a0The new record follows hype-building early singles <em>Alternative Facts<\/em> and <em>Gig Economy<\/em>, 2020\u2019s debut LP\u00a0\u20183D Routine\u2019\u00a0and 2021&#8217;s acclaimed\u00a0\u2018Lines Redacted,\u2019 which pushed their sound further earning support at\u00a0BBC 6 Music, Pitchfork, Quietus, Sunday Times\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>DIY\u00a0and, as\u00a0Uncut\u00a0wrote, saw them become \u201c<em>kindred spirits to Wand and King Gizzard &amp; The Lizard Wizard, two other bands prolifically honing their sound and approach, steadily developing their voice.&#8221;<\/em> Listen to <em>Get On Yer Soapbox<\/em> via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8jDKjHxdA8M?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Down Tools\u2019\u00a0was recorded in Leeds at Greenmount Studios with long-term collaborators,\u00a0Lee Smith\u00a0and\u00a0Jamie Lockhart (Yard Act, Easy Life, Cribs).\u00a0While grief and work balance form themes on the record, Hyndman\u2019s approach is largely made up of abstract, disconnected streams of consciousness and lines liberally taken from books, paintings, films and beyond.\u00a0Hyndman says of the recording process: \u201c<em>going into Greenmount was like returning to a childhood home, it\u2019s great re-connecting with Lee and Jamie. They let us do whatever we want within reason, we have fun and you kind of forget they are actually both amazing at what they do. So much of the guitar had to be improvised in the studio which was stressful but also intrinsic to creating the non-linear vibe of some of the stranger tracks\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the announcement of the new album, Mush has also shared a joyfully-unhinged\u00a0new single, <em>Get On Yer Soapbox<\/em> that dials up\u00a0the art-rock inflected\u00a0guitar jams.\u00a0Discussing the song, Hyndman says:\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;<em>Get On Yer Soapbox\u2019 is a righteous wig-out number, like \u2018Alternative Facts\u2019 but with more cowbell. All the solos are improvised and I very much doubt I will ever be able to recreate them live, you can hear the track going off the rails which is something I\u2019ve found exciting on records. Lyrically again it\u2019s a kind of re-purposing of an old idiom which I like to do. Generally being \u2018on your soapbox\u2019 is considered to be a bit of a slur but I think a bit of self-righteousness is warranted from time to time, especially with the shower of shite we&#8217;re dealing with\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mush formed in 2015, its first iteration being as a five-piece noise band with three guitars. Mush\u2019s MO and sound have changed a lot since then as the band continues to grow and hone their sound. On\u00a0\u20183D Routine\u2019,\u00a0the sound centered around the interweaving of dueling guitars of Steven Tyson and Hyndman.
