An eclectic song mixing the musical aesthetic of&nbsp;<em>Chindon\u2019ya\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;(Japanese marching bands) with Bollywood style grooves and baroque 70s film score orchestration, the song builds from an ominous trance to an energetic climax. Riding a low-slung shuffling beat, clustered guitar and horns, and always capable of shifting from a beguiling whisper to a histrionic wail at a moment\u2019s notice (while hitting every emotional and tonal register in between), Maya Kuroki\u2019s masterful vocals are on full display, bending into a growly syllable here or a breathy exhalation there. And while flutist Yuki Isami and trombonist Etienne Lebel daubed unique colours onto&nbsp;<em>Shirushi<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Gotoku Lemon&nbsp;<\/em>amplifies that impressive skill with inventive arrangements, darting between tight harmonies and solo lines. The result is something of a drunken bluesy calypso, with a lingering intensity just below the surface.<br>&nbsp;<br>Translating to \u201cLemon Enlightenment\u201d in English, the track sees lead vocalist Kuroki spinning a whimsical short story about a world in which glow-in-the-dark lemons are found to be the cure for all ills \u2013 but beware: like all good short stories, this one comes with a twist. In the end, the song serves as a warning to those who seek salvation in snake oil. Accompanied by an animated music video directed by Kuroki and the band\u2019s guitarist Sei Nakauchi Pelletier, this is sure to be the greatest avant-garde psych-noise fairy tale about lemons you will hear all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the video for <em>Gotoku Lemon<\/em> via YouTube below or <a href=\"https:\/\/pocp.co\/gotoku-lemon\">l<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pocp.co\/gotoku-lemon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">isten<\/a> through other methods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QnM29JXOmtg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the album,&nbsp;<em>\u201c\u2018Hagata\u2019 is a very deep word, something present but also something leftover from someone or something no longer there,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;Kuroki explains.&nbsp;<em>\u201cIt&#8217;s like waking up from a dream, or being connected to the other side of something.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;TEKE::TEKE are intimately familiar with that duality, of splitting reality between past and present, complex melodies and hushed interludes, intense action and lingering response.
