{"id":40131,"date":"2024-04-06T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-06T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=40131"},"modified":"2024-04-03T20:45:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T00:45:08","slug":"les-savy-fav-share-new-single-limo-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=40131","title":{"rendered":"Les Savy Fav share new single \u2018Limo Scene\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following the release of their\u00a0first new music in 14 years,\u00a0Les Savy Fav\u00a0is back again, to share their third single\u00a0<em>Limo Scene<\/em>, which lifted from upcoming LP\u00a0\u2018OUI, LSF,\u2019 due out\u00a0May 10th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about &#8220;Limo Scene&#8221;, Tim Harrington says,&nbsp;<em>\u201cThis song is the story of being abducted by the spirit of music past while out looking for the grave of Turner \u2018Rocky\u2019 Wilson Jr. \u2014 Rocky was bassist for the doo-wop band The Rivingtons. He made up \u2018Pappa-Oom-Mow-Mow\u2019 (1962) that the Trashmen took and uses for \u2018Surfin Bird\u2019 (1963.) It\u2019s been copped, quoted, and reinvented ever since including the end of this song. You could call it a love letter to musical legacy but fuck letter is more like it. But it\u2019s not like they had a messy breakup or quit to become bankers. They just had a lot of living to do.\u00a0<em>\u201cWhen we finished our last record, there was a sense that if we were going to do more, we wanted to do something more ambitious,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Harrington says.<em>\u00a0\u201cI think it took us a while to even get in a space where that was possible.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Remember, these five men \u2014\u00a0Harrington, Seth Jabour, Syd Butler, Harrison Haynes, Andrew Reuland\u00a0\u2014 have been friends and collaborators<strong>\u00a0since 1995<\/strong>, when they attended Rhode Island School of Design. It takes a beat to shake old habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the interim, the band has been busy building growing their families, taking and losing jobs, and living through the various ecstatic and hideous aspects of growing older. Harrington wrote and illustrated children\u2019s books (like\u00a02015\u2019s\u00a0<em>Nose to Toes You are Yumm<\/em><strong>y<\/strong>), ran out of money, built his attic studio, wrestled with mental health issues, and got a job-job as a creative director. Butler continued to run his label,\u00a0<em>Frenchkiss<\/em>\u00a0(which released the majority of the band\u2019s albums, including this one), and, along with Jabour, honed his writing skills as a member of Seth Meyers\u2019 8G band. Harrison left his career teaching to focus on fine art, while Reuland built a reputation as a film\/commercial editor and writer on Adult Swim\u2019s cult show\u00a0<em>Ballmastrz: 9009<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That onslaught of personal ambitions and adulting could spell death for many bands, but, as Harrington puts it:&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe band was never a job, so we can\u2019t get fired and don\u2019t have to quit. We had the time to figure out how to bring the people we\u2019ve become and the people we are as artists together authentically. There\u2019s a chaotic, untethered ecstasy at the center of the band\u2019s universe. Squaring that with the desire to create stability and the need to endure some grind isn\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the band has continued to perform, always on their own terms, but after a stint at Primavera in 2022, they caught the proverbial songwriting bug once more, sharing demos, jamming in Harrington\u2019s attic, and recording through the heap of DIY and esoteric gear Harrington collected over the last decade. At first, there was no intention of recording an album; they were playing music, not writing it.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe last record was a lot about holding on.\u00a0<\/em>\u2018OUI, LSF<em>\u2019 is the sound of release \u2014 no map, no preconceptions, no self-righteous certainty,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Butler says.\u00a0<em>\u201cThere&#8217;s nothing like hitting 50 to slap the cocksure vanity off your face.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0That\u2019s not to say it was easy. The challenge of learning a new way to write and work together took a lot of letting go. Among the artwork that plasters the attic studio is a piece by Harrington that reads,\u00a0<em>\u201cCan\u2019t do it how you want.
