Originally written and recorded in a lightning\u2011fast 15 minutes at the tail end of a 2014 session (when the mics were still up), it then drifted in limbo for years\u2014tossed on an EP, cut from the debut album, earmarked for the follow\u2011up LP, and pulled at the last second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Jo\u202fHirabayashi (\u5e73\u6797) explains: \u201c<em>I started jo\u202fpassed during a period of literal and figurative vagrancy. The name is a nod to a jazz musician and my insomnia\u2014writing was how I channeled the energy that kept me awake. Living out of a backpack, I embraced a minimalist DIY recording style and toured nonstop between Montreal and Vancouver.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With jo\u202fpassed\u2019s debut album \u202f\u2018Their Prime\u2019 on Sub Pop, themes of home and placelessness under late\u2011stage capitalism took center stage. But what felt like a dream quickly turned into burnout. \u201c<em>Everything fell apart,<\/em>\u201d Jo admits. After therapy, they shelved a follow\u2011up LP, quit Music\u2122, and threw themselves into helping friends with their albums and videos\u2014essentially taking their own \u201cweekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, <em>Weekend<\/em> is reborn as a cozy 90s\u2011tinged anthem about the undead, nostalgia, and the endless cycle of starts and stops. Think of it as a \u201cthrowaway banger\u201d from Sub Pop\u2019s biggest underdog, marking the close of one chapter and the hopeful dawn of the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To celebrate, jo\u202fpassed is hitting the road for a short Spring jaunt in their favorite stomping grounds, joined by Jo\u2019s siblings Cameron Gates and T\u00e9a\u202fMei.
