Chicago\u2019s own Kaput crash out of the underground on April 25th with their debut album \u2018One\u2019\u2014an explosive blend of post\u2011punk, no\u2011wave and noise rock that\u2019s as fearless as it is infectious. Fronted by Nadia Garofalo (formerly of Ganser and Heavy Feelings), honed in the Electrical Audio bunker by producer\/engineer Brian Fox, and driven by the M. Sord rhythm machine (Jon Spencer and the Hitmakers), Kaput have cooked up a record that rips through expectations and leaves a grin in its wake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing comparisons to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lambrini Girls, Black Midi, Gilla Band, Viagra Boys, Swans and Kim Gordon, Kaput thrive in the spaces where chaos meets melody. As Destroy\/\/Exist puts it, \u201cKaput is a fresh experimental art rock act which lifts inspiration from the unconventional aspects of post\u2011punk and noise rock.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On High Wire<\/em>, the band seethes with Chicago grit\u2014a pulsating beat snarls through darkened alleys, abrasive synths hiss, and every vocal screed feels like a battle cry. Post\u2011Punk nails it when they say the track “slashes through shadow\u2011streaked alleys with relentless rhythm.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runner<\/em> brings out Garofalo\u2019s dual power\u2014equal parts Karen O rawness and Deborah Harry charm\u2014letting pop sensibility shine through the dissonant riffs. As Analogue Trash observes, \u201cthe nods to post\u2011punk and No Wave bring out the darker tones of the lyrics, while the pop side peeks through.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaput\u2019s story isn\u2019t just about noise and fury. Their yearlong writing journey dives deep into anger\u2019s many faces\u2014sometimes sharp and punishing, sometimes quiet and revealing, always honest.
