Their new single,\u00a0<em>The Evil That You Know (Let it Go)<\/em>, is the second track they\u2019ve unleashed in 2025 (following April\u2019s moody\u00a0<em>Quick Sickness<\/em>), and it\u2019s already got us caught in its stormy swirl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This track isn\u2019t just dream pop\u2014it\u2019s&nbsp;<em>drama pop<\/em>. It kicks in with a heavy, pulsing beat, rolls into a hypnotic, insistent chord progression, and shimmers with that lush shoegaze haze we love. There\u2019s enough atmospheric synth to lift you out of your seat, but don\u2019t get too comfortable\u2014this one\u2019s coming back around to blow your roof off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zQ870Yo4vFM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jay Merrow, one half of the band\u2019s core songwriting\/production duo, says the song was literally born out of thunder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt started as this wall-of-sound moment\u2014guitars, drums, total chaos\u2014that felt like a loud thunderstorm. So we built this calm, synthy break in the middle, like the eye of the storm. Then it all crashes back in. That final chorus is my favourite moment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christine Stoesser, the other half of the duo (and the band\u2019s lyrical soul), digs into something deeper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis song\u2014and honestly, a lot of what we write\u2014is about self-deception. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever run out of things to say on that subject.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The track features drums recorded by Alexandre Bonenfant at Dreamhouse Studio in Toronto, and mastering magic courtesy of Brock McFarlane at CPS Mastering in Vancouver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, if you&#8217;re new to\u00a0Twin Rains, here\u2019s a little backstory: The band is made up of Jay Merrow, Christine Stoesser, and drummer Greg Smith. Their debut album\u00a0\u2018Automatic Hand\u2019 (2016) turned heads, landed them a publishing deal with NYC\u2019s Rough Trade Publishing, and even earned a spot on the Polaris Prize\u2019s longer list in 2017. Their tune\u00a0<em>Flash Burn<\/em> found its way into Seth Rogen\u2019s box office hit\u00a0<em>Good Boys<\/em>\u2014not bad for a debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, they\u2019ve lit up stages across Canada\u2014ROM\u2019s Friday Night Live, SWIFF\u2019s Cinegaze, Crystal Lake, Empty Fest, and more\u2014sharing stages with everyone from Luna Li to Zoon. During the pandemic, they scored the acclaimed&nbsp;<em>No Tickets at the Door<\/em>&nbsp;doc, capturing the heartbeat of Toronto\u2019s live music scene for Hot Docs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, they dropped their second album&nbsp;\u2018Unreal City,\u2019 with lead single&nbsp;<em>Strawberry Moon<\/em>&nbsp;earning spins on CBC and Sirius and props from Wavelength Music, who called the album \u201ca masterpiece\u201d and \u201cthe sleeper hit of the pandemic.\u201d Since then, it\u2019s been nothing but forward motion\u2014two killer singles in 2023, the heady&nbsp;<em>Quick Sickness<\/em>&nbsp;last month, and now, the swirling storm that is&nbsp;<em>The Evil That You Know (Let it Go)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get ready.
