But when I Googled it to double-check the reference, all I got were ads about crystal meth withdrawal. That\u2019s all I see now. So yeah, this song has a lot to answer for.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classic TNP: elegant, cryptic, and just a little weird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vad8yBqJZuU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>\u2018Crooked Wing\u2019: A Brutal Beauty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Crooked Wing\u2019 is the band\u2019s fifth full-length, produced by Jack Barnett with&nbsp;<strong>Graham Sutton<\/strong>&nbsp;(of Bark Psychosis fame) and executive-produced by George Barnett. This isn\u2019t your typical comeback album. It swings between intensity and stillness, harshness and harmony \u2014 sometimes in a single song. Expect everything from pipe organs and ancient bell recordings to clanking chains and moments of quiet awe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guests<\/strong>&nbsp;include&nbsp;<strong>Caroline Polachek<\/strong>&nbsp;and jazz legend&nbsp;<strong>Chris Laurence<\/strong>, while previously released singles like&nbsp;<em>A Season In Hell, Bells<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Industrial Love Song<\/em>&nbsp;(feat. Polachek) give a preview of the record\u2019s eclectic, ambitious vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Jack sums it up best: \u201c<em>It starts with a boy soprano singing from underground\u2026 like he\u2019s guiding you through filth and heaven, life and death, humans and machines\u2026 then back under the earth again, into silence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep \u2014 this is a These New Puritans album, through and through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DIY Spirit, Cinematic Scope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>George calls&nbsp;\u2018Crooked Wing\u2019&nbsp;\u201c<em>a DIY album that doesn\u2019t sound like one. It\u2019s just two enthusiastic amateurs doing what they want, oblivious to the world. Jack on piano, me smashing drums. It\u2019s pure and it\u2019s direct.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band recorded the album in all sorts of wild locations \u2014 churches, studios, industrial estates, circus wagons, cheap hotels. Each one left its ghostly mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, there&#8217;s even a field recording of ancient Eastern Orthodox church bells woven into the album&#8217;s DNA.
