The Canadian five-piece \u2014 made up of longtime pals Andy Shauf, Avery and Darryl Kissick, Dallas Bryson, and Colin Nealis \u2014 just dropped <em>Deadhead<\/em>, the final single and video lifted from their much-anticipated new album\u00a0\u2018<em>2<\/em>,\u2019 out now via ANTI-.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If their previous track <em>Yvonne<\/em> leaned into gentle beauty (AV Club called it \u201can understated kind of gorgeous\u201d), <em>Deadhead<\/em> turns things on its head in the best possible way. Clocking in at just over three minutes, it\u2019s a genre-hopping fever dream \u2014 think MF Doom-style samples, a jangly line-dance guitar riff, and blissed-out country harmonies, all stitched together with a patchwork of flutes, warped electronics, and surgically precise percussion. Somehow, it works beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, Andy Shauf\u2019s voice cuts through the sonic swirl with that signature warmth, singing \u201c<em>I won\u2019t stop dancing<\/em>\u201d \u2014 which is exactly what this track makes you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video? Pure puppet-fueled absurdity. Directed by Joe Cappa, it\u2019s got wigs, medieval garb, and a flute-playing puppet baby (yes, those baby legs belong to his real-life 10-month-old son). After touring their self-titled 2018 debut, they ditched the old \u201cband in a room\u201d formula. Instead, they worked long-distance, swapping sounds and sketches through shared folders while scattered across four provinces. Shauf would then piece together these fragments in Toronto, using samplers and beat-making techniques borrowed from hip-hop and musique concr\u00e8te to shape songs from the rubble. The result is an album that feels experimental, intimate, and totally alive \u2014 a collage of moods that\u2019s best blasted with the windows down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Andy Shauf has carved out a stellar solo career \u2014 from the bittersweet storytelling of&nbsp;<em>The Party<\/em>&nbsp;to the existential reflections of&nbsp;<em>Norm<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 Foxwarren taps into a different magic.
