And if the album title feels chaotic and capitalized in all the wrong ways, that\u2019s entirely the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a batch of leftovers. While Brooks casually refers to&nbsp;\u2018rECKless dRIVing\u2019&nbsp;as a collection of b-sides and demos from the cutting-room floor of&nbsp;\u2018i love you so !,\u2019 the truth is it\u2019s got its own gravitational pull \u2014 a lo-fi galaxy swirling with fuzzed-out emotion, tape hiss, and a whole lotta heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record kicks off with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/found.ee\/rdmanny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">manny<\/a><\/em>, a track born from a sleep-deprived, spliff-fueled jam session in Eagle Rock. Built on acoustic strums and a touch of smoke-induced magic, <em>manny<\/em> grows into something beautifully blown-out. As Brooks puts it, \u201c<em>The spliff wrote the song mostly.<\/em>\u201d Sometimes the best art shows up when you\u2019re just messing around \u2014 and\u00a0\u2018rECKless dRIVing\u2019\u00a0leans hard into that spontaneity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JUynbVrxHyY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Retail Drugs isn\u2019t a solo show either. Brooks keeps it in the family, teaming up with longtime collaborators Ali Genevich (guitar), Aaron Scannell (bass), and Josiah Martuscello (drums) \u2014 a crew that first linked up way back in high school in Saratoga Springs. Together, they cut their teeth in Albany\u2019s DIY scene before hitting the road with Laveda, Brooks\u2019 other band with Genevich. All that touring, late-night demoing, and city-hopping laid the groundwork for the sound of\u00a0\u2018rECKless dRIVing\u2019\u00a0\u2014 raw, emotional, and unbothered by genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where&nbsp;\u2018i love you so !\u2019 was steeped in grief and distortion,&nbsp;\u2018rECKless dRIVing\u2019&nbsp;offers a more vulnerable follow-up. Think gritty guitar jams, spacey instrumentals, lo-fi love letters, and everything in between. It&#8217;s a scrapbook of feelings, scribbled down on tape and left unpolished \u2014 on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks\u2019 analog obsession plays a big part in the record&#8217;s soul. After his mom passed away during sessions for Laveda\u2019s last record, he struggled to write. Enter: the tape deck. Gifted by Genevich, previously owned by Laveda\u2019s drummer, the recorder became a kind of spiritual collaborator \u2014 a tool that pulled Brooks out of a creative rut and helped him process the weight of loss through sound. \u201c<em>It felt like the tape was another person,<\/em>\u201d he says, and&nbsp;\u2018rECKless dRIVing\u2019&nbsp;is the result of that emotional reconnection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re thinking this is just a glorified demo tape? Think again. Ten of the eleven tracks are brand new.
