Psych-rock trailblazers The Brian Jonestown Massacre are hitting the road again \u2014 and this time, it\u2019s North America\u2019s turn to witness the spectacle. After a wildly successful run through the UK and Europe (including a hypnotic set at Glastonbury), the band returns stateside for an epic 40-date tour kicking off September 3 in Carrboro, North Carolina and winding down with a double-header in Los Angeles at the Teragram Ballroom on November 22 and 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With stops in major cities like New York, Chicago, Toronto, Nashville, and Seattle, plus a hometown celebration in San Francisco and a triumphant return to Levitation in Austin, this tour is set to be one for the books. They’re even teaming up with legendary Britpop band\u00a0Cast<\/em>\u00a0for two very special East Coast dates \u2014 their first U.S. appearance in nearly three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These shows follow the release of BJM\u2019s latest double A-side single,\u00a0Makes Me Great \/ Out Of Body<\/em>, a swirling dive into the band’s signature sonic kaleidoscope. Earmilk raved about the track’s \u201cdream-laced musical envelopment,\u201d while V13 likened its hazy glow to a glorious mashup of The Byrds, early Rolling Stones, and The Kinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those just joining the BJM orbit, here\u2019s the short version: frontman Anton Newcombe has been leading this psych-rock collective since the early \u201990s with an uncompromising vision and a penchant for saying \u201cno\u201d to just about everything \u2014 except making music. Since their debut single in 1992, Newcombe has built an unmatched catalogue of 20 studio albums, explored almost every dusty corner of the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll map, and inspired generations of artists along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the same guy who, as captured in the now-legendary 2004 documentary\u00a0\u2018Dig!<\/em>,\u2019 refused to play the industry game. Instead, he took the long road, the scenic detour, the weird alleyway with no signs \u2014 and somehow ended up at the forefront of modern underground rock. Now based in Berlin (with one flat for living and one converted into a studio), Newcombe continues to write, record, and produce at a near-maniacal pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the band dropped\u00a0\u2018The Future Is Your Past\u2019\u00a0\u2014 their 20th (!) studio album \u2014 after a creative breakthrough sparked by a 12-string guitar and an intense period that saw Newcombe writing a new song every day for 70 days straight. The band also released the dreamy, shoegaze-infused\u00a0Don\u2019t Look At Me<\/em>\u00a0featuring Aimee Nash later that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00a0Dig!<\/em>\u00a0celebrates its 20th anniversary with a remastered reissue (\u2018Dig! XX<\/em>\u2019), BJM shows no signs of slowing. If anything, they seem more vital, more locked in, more\u00a0alive<\/em>\u00a0than ever. Critics across the globe have been floored by recent live shows, calling them \u201ca masterclass in psychedelia,\u201d \u201cspiritual,\u201d and \u201ca reminder that BJM are a damn fine rock and roll band at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, that\u2019s what this tour is shaping up to be \u2014 a full-blown celebration of everything Anton Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre have built over the last three decades. The music. The madness. The myth. The refusal to compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Anton\u2019s words: \u201cNobody can stop me… I\u2019m not asking somebody. I\u2019m not making the rounds at Warners, saying \u2018please put out my record.\u2019 It\u2019s just for me.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s the fire he keeps jumping into, and we\u2019re lucky he keeps bringing the sparks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
