Danish experimental trio\u00a0Poptones\u00a0are back with a second taste of their upcoming album \u2018Pure,\u2019 and this one\u2019s got a wild origin story. Say Something Now<\/em> is out now via Happy Metal Records, and it’s equal parts soaring, strange, and unexpectedly heartfelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where lead single Skin of Sea<\/a><\/em> hinted at grandeur and instinctive composition, Say Something Now<\/em> jumps right off the deep end. The song was born during an artist residency on Denmark\u2019s windswept North Jutland coast \u2014 in the very same seaside house where former Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag spent his final days. But instead of political ghosts or windswept musings, Poptones found inspiration in… UNO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep, that<\/em> UNO. The band invented a colour-coded improvisational game using the classic card deck, where each draw dictated a musical move. Red meant chaos, green meant stillness, and action cards threw curveballs. It’s like if Brian Eno\u2019s Oblique Strategies<\/em> hooked up with John Zorn\u2019s Cobra<\/em> over a deck of plastic-coated madness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe chorus was taken straight from that improvisation,<\/em>\u201d the band explains. \u201cAnders and Simon both drew red, so they had to go full unpredictable. Mads drew green and a \u2018turn around\u2019 card, which meant he had to play his bass backwards \u2014 fretting with his right hand. That tension created something magical.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
