After creating the video, I realized another meaning too: sometimes all it takes is a friend\u2019s presence to pull you out of your deepest fears.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Drums to the Frontman\u2019s Mic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If Tamkin\u2019s name rings a bell, it\u2019s because he\u2019s lived about a dozen lifetimes in music already. In the \u201890s, he pounded the drums for Seattle experimental rock outfit&nbsp;<strong>Hovercraft<\/strong>, a project that saw him sharing stages with Foo Fighters, The Melvins, and even jamming with members of Soundgarden and Mudhoney in Seattle\u2019s legendary underground scene. Later, he returned to LA, playing with The Warlocks and working alongside heavyweights like Flea and John Frusciante, before pivoting into songwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That shift gave birth to\u00a0<strong>Xu Xu Fang<\/strong>, his psych-rock collective that won praise from Rolling Stone, The Onion AV Club, and MOJO for its dark, expansive soundscapes. Their music found its way into shows like\u00a0<em>Gossip Girl<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bates Motel<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Originals<\/em>, and even into advertising campaigns for global brands like Sephora. Xu Xu Fang\u2019s take on Bowie\u2019s\u00a0<em>China Girl<\/em>became a standout on a star-studded tribute compilation\u2014no small feat when you\u2019re up against Bowie\u2019s biggest disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enter MOTO SOLO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After years behind the kit, behind the curtain, or behind the scenes, Tamkin wanted a new challenge. MOTO SOLO is exactly that\u2014a project where he\u2019s front and center, writing, producing, and singing for the first time. \u201c<em>It was the only musical challenge left,\u201d<\/em> he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, he started building the debut MOTO SOLO record in his home studio, eventually teaming up with Michael Shuman to bring the songs to life. With GRAMMY-winning engineer Michael Harris (Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys) at the console, the recordings took on a widescreen feel\u2014equal parts shadowy synth-pop and hard-hitting rock ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where It Lands Sonically<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MOTO SOLO pulls from the drama of Depeche Mode, the pulse of New Order, and the theatrical thrust of Van Halen-era David Lee Roth. It\u2019s a dark, danceable mix, full of hypnotic grooves and Tamkin\u2019s cavern-deep vocals.
